Remarks :
Overall, the 4 years spent at college are worth remembering. Every time you think of the day spent there, it fills you with nostalgia and makes you want to go there again and again.
Entrance Preview :
I took the WBJEE, and scored a rank of 250. I opted for this college because it is a top reputed institute for engineering in India after the IIT's, and the faculty here is at par with the faculty at any other institute. I opted Mechanical engineering because I have a passion for this subject.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The course, though very rigorous and in line with the competitive exams like GATE, lacks any update with time. Some of the topics taught are useless in this current technology dominated world. Also, a few new technologies pertaining to the particular field should be added so as to make the student aware of the upcoming technology.
Internships Opportunities :
There is a systematic procedure for internship for graduates of 3rd year. Many top reputed firms visit the campus and take exams/ interviews to shortlist the best candidates based on their own requirements after which they are sometimes given pre-placement offers as well. The general stipend varies anywhere between 5k-10k.
Placement Experience :
Most of the students are placed every year. In mechanical engineering dept, almost 100% students got placed. Companies such as bajaj, maruti, tata motors, tata steel, siemens, amazon, sony, microsoft, yahoo, reliance, BPCL, IOCL, etc. visit and offer anything ranging from 5 lakhs - 20 lakhs
College Events :
There are 2 fests held each year for the engineering dept. They are Sanskriti-the cult fest and Srijan- the tech fest. Students across the city participate across different genres to compete and win and stash loads of cash prize money. Apart from this, the faculty of arts holds a separate fest, and there is a fresher welcome party for each branch as well.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
The fee structure is probably the cheapest for engineering in India. It costs a mere Rs. 1200 per semester. That amounts to Rs. 9600 for a period of 4 years. The fees is higher only for the students of IT branch, where the fees is Rs. 1500 per month. This is still cheap than any other engineering college.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
I don't know of any scholarship offered by the college for the general candidates. However, there was a scholarship available to OBC, SC, ST and PD candidates based on their parents' income.
Campus Life :
The overall gender ratio was pretty good, depicting that of the society. The campus life is fun with hustle-bustle all around you all the time. There was good facilities for lab activities, and a few sports as well. The competitions held during the tech fest and noteworthy.
Hostel Facilities :
The hostel was located about 2 kms away from the college campus. Though in the heart of the city with okay facilities, the overall environment in the hostel was not very good. Due to space constraints, only people living far away were given hostels. Apart from that, the food served was also awful, to say the least.
Alumni/Alumna :
The alumni network is very strong and each year we had an alumni meet where we invited all our alumni to give speeches and motivate the students. Also, many alumni help the students get jobs or open their own firms with a little bit of financial help.
Exam Structure :
The exam structure in designed such that it is not hectic on the student. The class exams dates are fixed in consultation with the students, and the final exam dates are given with proper gaps in between each paper. Even the labs are evaluated on a regular basis not leaving a huge burden at the last moment.
Admission :
The process started with filling up the form and then appearing for the examination. Once the results were out, an individual was required to go through a centralized counselling round to get their seat allotted, according to the preference given by them previously, based on subject interest and college choice.
Faculty :
The faculty without doubt is top notch. Though there are a few of them who are no interested in teaching or are not good enough, but that is the story of every other college, even the top ones. You cannot have a college with all off faculty breaking boundaries of student thinking.
