Remarks :
The college have some lose points to get into remark i.e. lacks some good staff, lab instruments/machinery. Yet studying here is not all that bad, to be an optimist I do have some good memories made here and that's all that matters. And to be very true I wouldn't recommend if you are very bright student, you may not get the best nourishment of your talent here, but for people like me it is quite good place to enjoy studies.
Entrance Preview :
It was based on the plus two marks entirely, I scored in my boards but couldn't make it to IITs, and 'cause I wanted to do Petroleum and three wasn't any other college in my locality for that so I chose GKU for my preferred stream.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The curriculum is quite similar to any other college in Punjab which offer the petroleum stream. First year was same for almost all the streams but from the second year is different and many subjects related to petroleum and energy sciences were added to the curriculum.
Internships Opportunities :
As mine is the first batch of studies for petroleum engineering from GKU, and it would be completed in the year 2017-18, there wasn't any internship for us until now, yet I came to know that the final year Diploma students were(PCPRE) placed for internships at NFL Bathinda and various other firms.
Placement Experience :
As I mentioned above being the first batch there hadn't any campus placement for petroleum students yet I caught some placement drives for other streams at our campus. There's a department for personality development and placements at our campus but we havn't been there until now.
College Events :
There was many events organised at the campus time to time, Many days such as Science Day, Teachers' Day are celebrated with quite enthusiasm. Many actors/singers from Punjabi film industries show up for their film promotions. There's an annual cultural festival organised at the campus, last year The CM of Punjab along with some Pollywood stars visited that event.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
I'd say the fee structure is feasible, many scholarships from government as well as other organizations are acceptable at GKU. Many students applied for Minority scholarship as well as the state higher education scholarship simultaneously for the same course and got the stipend.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
There's Indian bank branch in the campus, I have an account with it to submit the academic fees, yet I am unaware of any loan facility. I submitted the fee to the bank in cash. As I mentioned above we have all the government and private scholarships acceptable at GKU, The GKU itself provide scholarships/fee waiver to meritorious students who scores above at least 75% in their sems.
Campus Life :
The GKU campus, not quite as big to be called a university though, it has decent area covered with Parks and other academic buildings. We have a large sports ground mainly for BPE students, we too played there in the leisure times. I didn't heard of any discrimination of any kind, students from various parts of country i.e. North-east, Kashmir, Kerala, Bihar studied in GKU, even girls from North-east, Gujarat, Rajasthan were present too. and that thing provided us a chance to know other fellow people too. Most of them took part in the annual festival and presented their cultural dances.
Hostel Facilities :
The hostels are well maintained and provides Wi-Fi access throughout the campus. There are 3 boys and 1 girls' hostel inside the campus another hostel for the freshers is provided outside the campus in the city for preventing ragging. The food is not very good yet survivable. I liked the breakfast much more than the other two meals. We had Aloo Parathas with butter and Curd along with Tea in the breakfast. You are to have food from mess for at least 15 days if you live in hostel other 15 days you may take off and can have outside, thus you'll be charged for 15 days only.
Alumni/Alumna :
Seniors are very friendly, not the kind of "Seniors" because of many students fear to live in hostels, we lived peacefully and even got help from them while I taught some pass-outs Urdu. It was such a nice experience. Though I heard of some notorious elements, I didn't face any issue while living in the hostel.
Exam Structure :
Exam days are hectic for everyone, or at least engineering students they are. The Practical exams were before the theories for us, some other streams had it the other way out. Being it the first year most of the lab instruments were new though the labs lacked some machines yet overall we enjoyed our practicals
Faculty :
The teaching staff is decently qualified and quite helpful to the studies as well as other activities. The professors possess quite cool and calm nature yet I would say they don't have such thorough knowledge and hold over the subjects. Many of them aren't from petroleum background so many times they feel some kind of difficulties explaining some theories.
