Remarks :
Sometimes, management takes many actions too late. For that, students have to ask again and gain for something. But the director is so good that almost all the demands of students are fulfilled.
Entrance Preview :
I admitted in M.Tech in Power Electronics after clearing GATE-2015 cut-off. I scored 639 out of 1000 in GATE and my AIR rank was 1272. Power Electronics in IIEST, Shibpur is among top 5 in India. You can ask this to any PE professor in any IIT. I left my chance to do MS from IIT Kgp to join IIEST.
Course Curriculum Overview :
Power Electronics course is extremely well- organised. The laboratories are custom-made by college professors. The manuals are hand-typed. Because of this, we had to understand every single detail of the circuits. We are taught to make hard wire designs in the labs.
Internships Opportunities :
Yes, it provides internship. They are mostly tie-ups with multinational companies like Texas Instruments. The internship amount is close to 50 k Rs per month.
Placement Experience :
Hundred percent placement happen here. I have seen many having multiple jobs in final year. But placements in PG courses are not so good, though many got good jobs from the references of professors in here. ISRO chairman was an IIEST alumni. Names of the companies come here: Microsoft, Texas Instruments, BHEL, Accenture, TATA Power, etc.
College Events :
Each week, some or other seminar is on. National power electronics seminar happened last year in here. Companies from japan, China , America often visit here to see the labs. The labs are quite advanced in here. In last 1 month, i attended some 6 seminars in here.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
Fees structure is as per the norms of central government. It is 65 k per semester for B tech+M tech students and 40 k for M Tech students. But M tech students get scholarship worth 12.4 k per month. Living and paying the fees are quite manageable with that stipend.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Yes, the college has tie-ups with UCO, UBI ans SBI. Students can avail loans very easily. Colleges sometimes help needy students with free-studentship. Also, students entering under TFW scheme through WBJEE do not have to pay the tuition fees at all.
Campus Life :
It is an engineering college, and sadly, gender ratio among students are not uniform. But among teachers, it is almost 50:50. In my department, it is exactly 50:50. Diversity is good. People from all over the country comes here. Campus life is fun because the college is beside Ganges, you can go to riverside anytime you want.
Hostel Facilities :
For boys, the B Tech hostel facilities are more than one would ask for. The food is extremely good in here. Milk and cake in breakfast, chicken or fish in lunch and dinner. For veg, baby corn or mushroom or paneer is always there. But the M tech hostel facility is not good. They are building two more PG hostels now, but current situation is not good. For girls, both UG and PG hostels are luxurious.
Alumni/Alumna :
Seniors are helpful due to strict laws, ragging is eliminated from the campus. The alumni network is so strong that they helped the college to build an entire swimming pool. Because it is a 150+ years old college. Its alumni is spread all over the world. that;s why its influence outside India is good.
Exam Structure :
It is balanced. You'll have a mid-semester and an end-semester exam. Both are taken very seriously here. The lab experiments normally depend on the professors assigned. Normally it happens after end semester. The lab is quite demanding and you have to pay attention while performing the experiments. The lab report has to be detailed and normally is of 20 to 30 pages long for each experiment. Because of this, students get to learn a lot.
Faculty :
Most of the faculties are so good that you need not have nay other help from anywhere. The teaching is mostly based on fundamentals hence your basics need to be strong. Because the teachers do not follow any particular book and teach from their own experiences, you have to attentive in classes.
