Beautiful place for engineering

Remarks :

It is one of the old NITs and is very prestigious. It offers good placement opportunities and a location that unique. It is located just beside a beach, has a huge campus. The research capability is really good and most of the alumni are in very good positions, the package offered for CS and IT branches is really high and other programs too have average packages much above other colleges. NITK comes under the top 3 NITs and has been maintaining the position since a long time. The semester usually starts from July 3rd week and there is a break after every semester, winter break usually is one 25 days and the summer break lasts for about two months. The admission process usually is done within a day.

Course Curriculum Overview :

My decision was driven by my interest in physics. I opted for mechanical engineering. However proper counselling is needed to make a well-informed decision about what branch to choose. The ratio of faculty to a student depends on the individual branches and in mechanical it was about 25 students per professor as a rough estimate. Most are assistant professors and some have PhD from foreign universities too. Teaching method varies from professor to professor, most make the use of technology and teach according to the curriculum. The assessments are done by the method of relative grading which means the grade depends on how everybody else performs relative to you. The competition for the top grade exists but it's fairly easy to pass with a decent effort. The evaluation is continuous form, apart from mid-term and end-term exams, there are smaller exams and assignments given time to time.

Internships Opportunities :

Internship opportunities are good in the tech field, in core, the opportunities are less as in any other college. Programmers get good internships and convert to full-time offer usually. The internship is done after the 3 years during the vacation and lasts 2 months, some offer 6 months internships as well.

Placement Experience :

Placements are really good and at par with other top NITs. The alumni network is strong and opportunities are good, the CS and IT branches have excellent packages. There is a lot of analyst and a couple of consulting companies that also come for placements and offer an average of 8LPA. companies like Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, texas instruments, Qualcomm, Wells Fargo, fedility visit the college every year. The highest package is for the CS/IT branches usually one of the top companies like Microsoft. Mechanical engineers have a maximum package of 18 lakhs given by PSUs. The average package for mechanical is around 7-7.5. Usually every year the placement percentage is more than 95. I'm planning to work now.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

The cost for education is decent compared to other colleges, being a government institution the fee is subsidised. For non-general and people who low-income candidates there are different exemptions of various amounts. I got an internship at a startup in winter and got placed in a leading, fast-growing industry in the mechanical field. The package was very similar to other company salaries of Graduate Engineer Trainee. There are an SBI and a Canara bank branch on campus which handle student loans.

Campus Life :

The social life at NITK is brilliant, from fun lovers to innovators to artists. There is a club for everybody. There are 6 exclusive technical clubs and there is a wide range of cultural clubs which organise various events throughout the year. The tech fest called "Engineer" takes place in October and the cultural fest called "incident" takes place in March of every year. The library has good availability of all the course-related books and college also gives access to journals and research websites. There are many events that keep happening like Inter-branch, inter nit, inter-program competitions, both cultural and sports. The official processes like application, attendance, courses assignments and a lot of other work is done online and managed by a student developed portal. Its an in House management system which has become the heart of NITk.

Hostel Facilities :

Wifi, Shared washrooms, one per wing of 20 students, 5-6 options mess for food. The hostel is on the campus and can accommodate all the students. Affordable, neat. The fee for the hostel is not high and the hostels are maintained well even though they are old.

Course Curriculum Overview:

As I'm in 1st semester. I will update you after my exams. But one good thing is that from this year, internals and externals will hold same weightage i.e., 50/50 If you can score more than 45% in internals which wouldn't be that big of a deal because they'll ask most the questions from class notes. Most of the faculties are average I would say. But some are good professors too. I chose CSE because I find these topics interesting since junior school. And everyone is just jumping into cse is a reason too lol.

Remarks:

Well it was a emerging glorious institution, so I chose it. Also it has good facilities with good experience of atleast 10 years in the field of education. The infrastructure of my university is excellent. It has all the facilities needed for the overall development of a student. Although it us situated little of the city, it is totally worth the travel.
