Remarks :
Loreto College offers one of the best courses in Geography in Kolkata. It is a reputed institution founded in 1912 and is well known for its experienced teaching faculty. The thing I liked the most about the college is it believes in a holistic development of an individual. It is not only committed to achieve academic excellence but also encourages one to be a part of other social activities and occasions. I have always been interested in the phenomenons of the earth, the different geological cycles, the mysteries behind the geographical formation. My evolving interest towards geography from my High School has been the major push for me to opt for this course.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The course curriculum has been recently updated in 2019. For my course there are classes on GIS and other software skills which I think is extremely important for higher studies. The faculty is co-ordinated, experienced and student friendly. Dr. Sushma Sahai, Mrs. Sabiha Sethwala and Mrs. Sharmila Ray Kumam are really good.
Internships Opportunities :
During my college, I interned with the Environment Department, Government of West Bengal as a Research Intern. It was an unpaid internship.
Placement Experience :
The college has a placement cell but it work actively for the students pursuing B.Ed. The undergraduates don't opt sitting for placements after their completion of graduation. The placement process in the case of B.Ed is strong with a good alumni network.
College Events :
The college hosts its annual festival called 'Samagam' that goes on for three days with different colleges participating in the various events organised by Loreto College. The different societies of the college come up with their events such as the Sports society hosts games like chess, badminton. The 'We nature society' hosts rangoli making, using biodegradables to make something, a game to make something by recycling wastes. The other societies such as the Eastern and Western Cultural Society, Dramatics Society come up with their own events. Every event in the calendar is celebrated with much enthusiasm in the college be that Teachers Day, Children's day, Earth Day or Water Day. There is an 'Open Day' celebrated in college where the students put up food and game stalls. The students participate in these events with much enthusiasm.
Campus Life :
The library is known to be the best in Kolkata because of its wide range of collection in books, journals, newsletter, magazines etc. The campus has a newly built basketball court. The college has a ground adjacent to it for other sports activities. The computer rooms are well equipped with sufficient desktops. The college has its own xerox room to cater to the needs of the students. It has a reading room as well. The college has an auditorium that has been renovated for college gatherings and assemblies. There's a common room for the students, that is equipped with fitness machines, tennis table for the entertainment of students. Being built in 1912, the infrastructure of the college is one of a king with huge pillars supporting it.
