Remarks :
During my time the Institute Mangement was extremely thoughtful and interactive.
Course Curriculum Overview :
It was very balanced.First year, most of the subjects were common with other branches of engineering - besides engineering related subjects as Applied Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Engineering Drawing etc., Social Sciences, History, Civics etc.In 2nd, 3rd, 4th year, the subjects were more focused on specific branch of engineering as in my case Strength of Materials, Heat Engines, Foundry, Fabrication, Machining, Sheet metal, Electrical Engineering basics.
Internships Opportunities :
Internship stipend was not popular those years. In Kharagpur, Practical Training was compulsory all the four years.I had my training in: Pyare lal & Sons Delhi -an automotive unit FIAT Co., Bombay- an Auto Co., Alwyn Metal Works, Hyderadabad, Refrigerator Mfg Co., Mukund Iron & Works, Bombay, No stipend was offered anywhere.
College Events :
1. Gymkhan Annual Sports within IIT2. Inter Hall Annual Competion-Sports3. Inter Hall Annual Music Competition 4. Inter Hall Annual Debates Competition5. Inter Hall Annual Swimming Competition.
Campus Life :
Campus Life was the best part of IIT Kgp life. There were plenty of opportunities to dwell in extracurricular activities-Sports, Music, Cultural activities, Hobbies, Debates etc. Lab quality in each engineering branch was very good. There were many inter Hall competions such as:1. Gymkhan Annual Sports within IIT 2. Inter Hall Annual Competion-Sports 3. Inter Hall Annual Music Competition 4. Inter Hall Annual Debates Competition5. Inter Hall Annual Swimming Competition.
Alumni/Alumna :
IIT Kgp Alumini Assocn has been very active all these yearsI have been an Alumnus for 55 years now. Alumni Assn is active in other countries too as USA,Germany, UK etcI enjoyed the membership in India & abroad where ever I was.
Exam Structure :
The Examination Structure was quarterly both:1. Closed Book & 2. Open BookThe Open Book Exams were most difficult and challenging. These were conducted in the Institute's seven storeyed Library where students could consult any book they wanted. The students were allowed to bring books from outside also if they wanted. The final marks were a combination of Closed Book, Open Book and daily performance by the teachers.
Faculty :
The faculty was very good-select professors from all over India, nay the world-at least few of them. Most of my teachers later became directors of other Engineering Institutes in India & abroad.
