Pritam's Review On National Institute Of Fashion Technology - [NIFT], Kangra

Course Curriculum Overview :

It is a four year course in which we are taught design items like footwear, jewelry, bags or shoes. The students enrolled gets specialized learning in consumer behavior, market dynamics and the business practices in the field of lifestyle and fashion accessories. The course curriculum include practical exposure by means of fashion shows, workshops, seminars, geometric constructions, fabric embellishment techniques and photography. We are thus skilled in such a manner to express our thoughts and ideas through designs which reflect a given idea and vision.

Placement Experience :

The top recruiting companies that came during my time were Tanishq, Titan, Pantaloons, Gitanjali Jewellary, Jabong, ITC Wills Lifestyle, VIP luggage, Amazon etc. The job position offered are visual merchandiser, footwear designer, retail store manager, gift-wear maker, product manager, CNC milling operator, Lifestyle product maker, etc. The average starting salary ranges from 3 to 9 LPA. Internships were also offered in areas such as fashion boutiques, garment manufacturing unit, cooperating houses, design production management etc.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

The total fees for 4 years is 11 LPA. The hostel and mess fees is to be paid separately. An additional fees of 1000 as admission fees is to be deposited in the first year itself. The fees is quite a bit expensive because of the campus and facilities that the college has provided us with.

Campus Life :

Programs such as Fashion walk, Craft designing, Weaving, Knitting, Photography exhibitions, Literacy fests, Food Fest, Pottery, Music and dance competition are held in our college so that the student can showcase their talents. Sports activities such as football, basketball, badminton, wrestling are also conducted by the college council. We are also taken to trekking and field trips in the beautiful valley of Himachal Pradesh.

Hostel Facilities :

The campus of NIFT Kangra have the hostel facilities for female students only. The hostel spreads across an area of 12 acres and have 238 rooms which further accommodate around to 476 students. Their are 8 guestrooms as well. Other facilities include campus radio, design school, water cooler, hot water bath, WiFi facility, attached bathrooms, a well stocked resource center, etc. A stationary store is also provided to these student's hostel. The canteen and mess food is also quite good and healthy. I would rate the facilities 3.5/5.

Admission :

The students should have passed 12th exams from any recognized board and have cleared ""Creative Ability Test"" and ""General Ability Test"" which is conducted by the NIFT department. If you are selected, you need to give a situation test and after that a group discussion round. The final round will judged by the interview process on the basis of which admission will be granted.

Faculty :

The teachers are very knowledgeable and well experienced in their course if action. Some of them are graphic designers which tell us how to create graphics for publishing houses, design projects and advertisements. They follow an open door policy, where we can ask them any time about our doubts in concepts related to fashion and apparel designing. They spend a fair amount of time on us so that we possess practical, business, creative skills on designing a part of shape or configuration in the top industries.

The students can start getting placement offers from the 6th semester itself in the form of PPOs(Pre Placement Offers), A lot of high value companies give placements and the placement drive starts early in the 7th semester itself. The percentage of students placed generally is upwards of the 75% mark. The students can get placed in any sort of company as per their pedigree. Some PSUs also offer few positions directly. The institute also has MOUs with some other Institutes that offer Masters and Post Graduation programmes directly.
