Remarks :
The college lived up to my expectations and I really enjoyed my three year stay there. Would not mind going back to academia.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The course content covers Ancient, Mediaeval & Modern Indian History, British History, American/Chinese History, European History. Besides there were compulsory courses in English and Hindi. This being an Arts course does not provide any industry-specific knowledge and on-campus placements were rare during those times.
Placement Experience :
Not applicable. There were virtually no on-campus placements during those times for fresh graduates. One could, however, apply directly to corporates and MNCs were always eager to hire Stephenians.
College Events :
Harmony, the annual college festival was the biggest event with wide participation from other colleges. Besides, the college excelled in promoting extra-curricular activities ranging from indoor and outdoor sports and games to debates, drama, essay writing etc. There was wide participation and some of the college alumni have been top sportsmen.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
The fees during our times were nominal at Rs 15 per month. No admission fees were payable. Only some security deposits for the library and hostel accommodation were applicable. fees were paid through bank account maintained at Extension Counter of a bank within the college premises.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Not applicable. Did not consider the need to apply for any scholarship or student loan as fees were minimal and affordable.
Campus Life :
Campus life was great and especially for hostellers who were a small, well-knit group with plenty of activity around e.g. tennis, squash, basketball, TT, badminton as well as cricket, hockey, football etc. besides Bridge, Chess, Scrabble and dramatics.
Hostel Facilities :
The hostels were decent with both individual and shared accommodation. The washrooms were common and rooms were serviced. Separate accommodation was available for girls in one section of a hostel. The fees were Rs 20 a month plus mess charges of Rs 120 per month.
Alumni/Alumna :
The alumni network is pretty strong across the world and regular meets are held. There is a lot of bon homie and camaraderie.
Admission :
With mother, elder brother and cousins having studied at this premier institution, there really was no other choice even though, as part of plan B, I applied to the college across the road, Hindu College. Applied for Economics and History Honours courses and was selected for the latter after an interview.
Faculty :
The half-a-dozen lecturers that taught us were young, energetic and erudite. The average age was 38 and most of them were PhDs with good knowledge of the subject. Some of them were authorities in their field and commanded great respect in the academic world.
