A Mixed experience at Panjab University

Remarks :

College doing good but needs improvement. Emphasis should be laid on modern technology and equipment like e-classrooms, e-payment, better common areas etc. Declining rank of the university in the education rankings is something to worry about.

Course Curriculum Overview :

My course being an integrated course, it deals with subjects of B. A. as well as Law. What I feel is, Eventually if the course is going to produce legal professionals least and basic knowledge should be given of the Arts subjects as they are not much useful and the syllabus of those subjects should be set accordingly that it suits even the legal field. For eg. Some of the theories in Political Science are irrelevant and no longer used they should cease to be in syllabus. The curriculum does not cover practical knowledge and is limited to theoretical one though the theoretical part to some extent is related to the on field work.

Placement Experience :

As stated earlier not much emphasis is given to on field training of practical knowledge in the department, it is just that compulsory internship is there for 4th and 5th year students. The Department though has a dedicated Placement cell but still, the placements aren't very good.

College Events :

My department and the university at whole does conduct cultural and technical festivals. My department has a cultural committee which takes care of the cultural programmes and fests. The main fest of the department is named DRISHYAM and university has sports and cultural dests like Aghaaz etc.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

The fees structure of the most university departments is feasible and reasonable but for a few departments like UILS the fee is a lot higher than the other departments due to some private stake in the department. Annual fee is approximately 85k, which is not reasonable and feasible. Admission fee is charged as well and the total fee is very high. The college does not provide much transparency in the fee breakdown, the fee is generally divided into two heads one goes to the University Registrar account and the other to the Department's Director.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

I did not opt for any of them.

Campus Life :

Campus life in University is quite an experience. University accommodates students from different backgrounds, cultures, religions, states, countries etc. Which makes the stay and study a learning experience at the university. Gender ratio varies from course to course, for eg. We have more boys in the physical Education department though the number of girls increase every year. And there are more girls in the fresh batches of integrated law courses. Another thing which is quite actively done in university is politics for the students council. Sports in university is at a good level and university does have appropriate and required resources for the same.

Hostel Facilities :

Yes, most of the rooms are shared by two residents though originally the rooms were made for and inhabited by single resident. Due to shortage of place and rising student strength, thode single rooms have been converted into twin sharing which causes problems like lack of space in rooms and queuing at washrooms as well. The condition of hostel rooms and washrooms is pathetic. Broken tiles and doors and dirt all over makes the stay in hostel horrible. The Hostel rent is approximately 6000 for one semester i. e. 1000 for a month. Seats at the hostels are limited, so students have to opt for PG which are expensive and distant from the university. Pg's charge 3000 to 8000 just as rent that is many a times than the hostel rent.

Alumni/Alumna :

The seniors at the university are helpful and are there in the time of need. Alumni lectures are held and are encouraging for the students.

Admission :

One of the reason to opt this course was my inclination in becoming a law abiding citizen and understanding the legal process. The Factors that made me choose this institution were it being a government university, name and fame of my department in the legal arena, The location (i. e. chandigarh) of the university suits me a lot and Panjab University's prestige. The admission process to this course included filling up an online form on the website of the department and filling up all the particulars and marks of 10th and 12th standard. The admission is based on the rank of the student in the merit list which is made by cumulative score of the entrance exam and 12th marks which is divided by 2 to get a score out of 100. The entrance exam takes place and merit list is released and counselings take place accordingly.

Faculty :

My department i. e. UILS has a faculty of about 20 teachers. Most of them are highly qualified with having a good experience but some of the faculty is recruited as guest faculty, Some of the guest faculty lacks experience and practical knowledge. The age of the faculty ranges from approx 30 to 55. The Professors and assistant professors are all Phd. And rest of faculty is atleast a master degree holder.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Course is not that well designed. The Subjects are not being taught for real-world applications. Especially B.Com LLb is being taught as unwillingly. They don't care for B.com LLb students at all. Teachers available for B.com are very poorly qualified as compared to B.A LLb Teachers. Frequency of Exams is good. But Presentations can be a bit Time Consuming.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Firstly, the university provides for all types of law, BA, BBA or BCOM and the fees are very reasonable compared to other private colleges. UILS focuses on both academics and curriculum activities like moot court, and various types of competitions for skills development. But the only major issue is that, we have classes the whole day with just a one hour recess. from 9:30 till 4:20. It exhausts the students, after which the entire day is considered as waste
