Harshal Katkar's Review On University Institute Of Legal Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh

Course Curriculum Overview :

The duration of the course is 5 years and the learning is facilitated by jail and court visits regularly. Various debate competitions and Intra Moot competitions are also held. The course is structured in such a manner that students are trained in the essence of substantive laws.

Placement Experience :

The placements are not that good as compared to other universities. Kpmg comes every year but recruits only a fraction of students and that too at a very low package which is around INR 35,000 per month. However, internships are compulsory for every student.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

The total fees of the course as per the University latest handbook of information which is published at the start of the academic session is 2.5 lacs which is feasible. This fee is exclusive of hostel fees and other charges. The fee structure is quite decent and affordable.

Campus Life :

A number of events are organised such as MUNs, Moot competitions, quiz contests, debates, cultural fests, annual fest etc. Keeping in mind the cultural and regional diversity, all the festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm and ardour.

Admission :

Admission is done on the basis of an entrance exam which is of 200 marks and the score is calculated as follows : 1) 50% (entrance exam) 2) 50% (qualifying exam) Eligibility criteria for the same is as follows : Candidates should have passed 10+2 examination in commerce with at least 50% marks (45% marks in case of SC/ST) from any recognized Board/University.

Faculty :

Faculty is very experienced and renowned. They are affable and supportive. They teach with great enthusiasm and zeal. All the professors are regular. All the teachers have studied from top colleges. Sometimes, judges and lawyers come to our college to teach us the legal case studies.

Course Curriculum Overview:

Curriculum is brilliant as compared to other law colleges. One of the major achievement of this college is that our college gives the majority of judges to District Courts, High Courts and other courts. The pass out students are very successful in there particular fields and earning very nice. The curriculum prepares a student for real world application of the law and how to pursue with it relating it to the facts of a particular case. One major point of improvement is placement cell as there is no on campus placement in our college.

Placement Experience:

The students become eligible for campus placement in the last two semesters. The placement cell of my university is very good. The highest package reaches up to 13-15 lakhs while the average is about 3.5-6 lakhs. The main role for which the students are employed is junior legal advisor. Most of the students get placements. I plan to pursue my own litigation career in the High court.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I chose for law i.e., B.A.LL.B. (Hons.) 5 Years Integrated Course in Panjab University. This department is named as University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) at Panjab University. The faculty members are super friendly, especially with the newcomers. They try to resolve every issue faced by students at their level. The average teacher student ratio is 1:60 as there are 360 seats for candidates applying for B.A.LL.B. (Hons.) and they are divided into two main streams, separate for Arts and Commerce students, then again got divided into sections. The medium of teaching is English. The term exams are held after every 5-6 months of period and are really not that hard but you have to struggle for good markings, obviously.

Remarks:

The University is remarkable in every manner. I don't recall having any issue or bad remark for it

Admission:

Belonging to a lawyer family background I always wanted to pursue law after my graduation. With increasing amount of competition to do great in life, I faced many issues while choosing an institution to pursue my degree after graduation. I was in constant lookout for colleges and what they are serving when I landed up on Chandigarh University's online portfolio. The University not only has an edge in education from other private or government institutions but they also deliver on their motto of discover learning. The teaching methods have an ace over other studying methods and also the University guarantees 100% placement. Apart from this the University has a lively atmosphere with sufficient amount of greenery around and fresh atmosphere as it is located away from the turbulent cities. The campus is absolutely safe for both boys and girls and is ragging free. I have been here for about an year now, but the University seems like my best decision for studying at.

Remarks:

College doing good but needs improvement. Emphasis should be laid on modern technology and equipment like e-classrooms, e-payment, better common areas etc. Declining rank of the university in the education rankings is something to worry about.
