A forester's dream

Remarks :

Let's start with the negative remarks. The attendance policy is something that needs to be changed. The scope for research and extra curricular activities gets hampered due to the attendance policy. The hostel facilities needs to be improved and certain hostel regulations needs to be changed. The positive side obviously would include the faculty available and the experience and exposure they share. The scope of higher studies is good enough.

Course Curriculum Overview :

The course structure is fine for all the courses that are tought over here. Semester system is followed by the university. The lab facilities are good and the students get to learn from the scientists themselves. However, there must be upgradation in labs. The examinations are pretty much easy if one studies. The future scope is good in terms of research or further studies. The exposure is tremendous.

Placement Experience :

Wood science and technology is a course with 100% placement. Companies, mainly wood based companies comes for recruitment. Cellulose and paper technology is another course with placement over 80%. These courses places their students in industrial sectors. Other courses have considerable amount of placement both in NGOs and in plantation firm. Others go for higher education and rest towards civil services.

College Events :

FRI has annual sports, cultural day and other events. Being a research institute and located in the middle of forest, it's not always possible to celebrate all festivals. However technical events and management events are held every year. Hindi prakharan, international biodiversity congress, forestry day, and such similar events are held. Other small scale cultural events are organised by IFSA LC FRI (a student wing) in collaboration with FRIDU and ENVIS.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

The fee structure is 40000 and around. It's feasible in terms of the exposure it gives to the student. The fee structure includes the hostel fees. The hostel fees is 4000 per semester ( ie, for six months) which is nominal in terms of central university.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

The students receive a scholarship of 12000 rupees if he/she tops in the semester examinations. Other than that there is no other scholarship that is provided by the university. I am not aware of any loan facility provided by the university.

Campus Life :

The gender ratio is high with almost equal ratio. The hostels are good in terms of space for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Accessories for sports are provided by the university itself. The extracurricular activities are less compared to other universities. However, sports week is taken very seriously. Complaints based on ragging, religion, race, economic status, sexual orientation and/or politics are rarely heard. The campus is very peaceful, with good environment to study, and people live in harmony. Located in the valley of dehradun, it's a good university with quality education.

Hostel Facilities :

The hostel is pretty good, with options for single rooms. Separate beds are provided. The hostel have several common bathrooms that reduces congestion. The hostel has 24×7 water and electricity services which are hampered during rainy season. Wi-Fi and LAN is provided which doesn't work. Bathrooms are cleaned regularly. Very few cellular network works in the hostel. However, good amount of birds can be seen from the balcony of shisham hostel. The hostel has cooperative mess run by the students on no-profit and no-loss basis.

Alumni/Alumna :

The alumni network is strong and the seniors are helpful. They regularly post about job opportunities in companies, the openings in universities outside India, the scholarship schemes abroad. They also help in research fields. The connection between the seniors and juniors is strong as the courses that are taught in the University is streamlined and thus be it in research or corporate world, we get to meet seniors often.

Admission :

The form for MSc. comes in the month of January, to which we need to fill up the form and submit it offline via post. Then the university send the examination centre to the students by post. The exam is held on scheduled date and the name of students in merit list are published online. The rest of the detail can be found on the official site.

Faculty :

The faculty is remarkable. We get to learn from the scientists themselves. However, scientists are not professors. Scientists share their practical knowledge, their work experiences and that is incomparable. Professors are something that I miss in this college.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I have done my Bachelors in Agriculture so I was more of interested in plant physiology ,genetics ,breeding and seed pathology etc, so as seed science is a part of this course I have chosen this course. The course helps in many real world experiences as we perform field work , we have done work on millets as 2023 was the international year of millets, we have started work on seed priming in lab , started multilocational trials on wheat, millets , started work on seed pathology on various vegetables etc. The improvements needed in course is that the timing of our main exam given is only 2 hrs and the 4 long answers questions are ti be written which is of 15 marks respectively which should be increased.

Course Curriculum Overview:

the curriculum included a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. fieldwork, internships, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, and industrial workshops enhance real-world applicability. the scientific and research methods we learn prepare us for further academic careers in research. improvements: practicing modern agricultural techniques like digital farming, drones or aeroponics will prepare us for our future endeavors. we had the semester system, where the exams were spaced out by 6 months. we had a total of 8 semesters. the difficulty level was normal to medium but the marking by the university was very harsh.

The seed Science department is a smaller ground in the Agriculture field but it is a very important subject. Job opportunities are very high in this department because you can be appointed in different private seed-producing companies and also there is the government sector.

Remarks:

Management is one of the worst I've seen. College is great in the part of educational tours thourough which you'll cover almost all Forest types of the country. Also some scientists are amazing. And there are lot of opportunities for relevant projects. The worst part is university's unsupportive attitude, and bad management.

Remarks:

In the past FRI was considered the temple of Forestry. I think it was because of some reason. Reason could be the management, administration and quality students. I'm hopeful that if quality students are provided with best management and administration, then it can regain it's old reputation. They will have to be a bit more serious for quality syllabus as well as faculty. Seriousness is not just limiting attendence to 75% or more. Moreover quality doesn't come from attendence or something.
