Remarks

Goa Medical College and Hospital is one of the oldest medical college in India well known for the quality of education it provides. The college enjoys a healthy reputation in the region and has been applauded by the people of the state availing it's facilities. Definitely a great college.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

Goa Medical College and Hospital provides courses in the medical and paramedic courses. The course curriculum is structured by the Goa University, of which Goa Medical College is a part of. The curriculum adheres to the latest developments in the field of medicine and is a holistic approach towards the study of medicine. Exam structure too is decided by the Goa University. There are semester exams at the end of each semester and Final exams at the end of each term. Finals account for 65% of total weightage and internals account for 35% of the weightage. 50% marks are required to pass each term.

Placement Experience

4

Being a medical college, there is as such no placement opportunities as in engineering college. The college provides internship after completion of final year MBBS which is essential for graduating. The stipend for internship is around Rs 15000 per month and the duration is for a year. The internship allows the student to experience the work of each and every department of the college.

College Events

3.5

The college conducts various intra and inter college events every year. The inter college events comprise of inter semester sports meet, various competitions of art and culture during various festivals , Annual day, Medical ball etc. The college also conducts an inter college event called Plexus every year in which various colleges from Goa take part. Also the college organises a medical conference called GOMECON open for people involved in medical field. The conference consists of various workshops, competitions etc.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is quite feasible considering it being a medical college. The fees change every year for every new batch but they remain the same throughout the course for a particular batch. The fees are different for General students and for SC/ST/OBC students. Fees are collected every 6 months and for the current new batch it is about Rs 50000 per semester.

Fees and Financial Aid

The college itself doesn't provide any scholarship that I know of. There are scholarships provided by the Goa University and the Directorate of Education of Goa to meritorious students though, none of which I avail.

Campus Life

4

Various extracurricular activities organised by the college are the intersems sports meet, the intercollegiate event Plexus and various others. The students also take part in sports and cultural events organised by other colleges as well. The laboratories in the college are pretty well maintained and well equipped. The college has provisions for pursuing sports as well, with a dedicated sports dept and a sports coordinator. The college utilises the playgrounds owned by the Goa University

Hostel Facilities

3.5

Yes, I've opted for hostel. The hostel infrastructure is honestly not quite well for the boys hostel. The facilities for water, parking etc are available although the boys hostel lacks a mess. The hostels are undergoing renovations though and are expected to be better soon

Alumni/Alumna

The alumni network and senior students are of great help to their juniors as they provide them with valuable guide to perform well while in college. They also provide with study aids which are very helpful.

Admission

For admission into Goa Medical College, aspiring candidates have to answer the National entrance eligibility test (NEET) and then the selection is done on the basis of merit. Goa State government has about 85% seats for the domicile population of Goa and rest 15% is for all India students

Faculty

4

The faculty of the college consists of brilliant doctors who not only have a great deal of experience in teaching but also great amount of experience in the medical practice itself. The faculty does a great work in providing the best of medical education in the simplest and interesting way. They not only help in the field of education but also for all round development of students to become better and responsibile people of the society.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The academics here is really great. They focus much on clinical aspects rather than on non clinical. The SGDs( small group discussion) and SDLs( self Directed learning) are better approachable form to reach students here they make a small group of five students per teacher for the discussion and gives a topic for the discussion. One improvement I will suggest is to use animated videos more in lectures rather than written slides. Frequency and timings of exams are perfectly coordinated (somewhat frequency is more????) that gives a better time and pressure to revise the contents taught.

I decided to choose this course when I was 14. Curriculum is well balanced for students so they can easily prepare for real world applications. Timings of classes can be changed. Exam timings are good but frequency is high.
