Yours sincerely, ISM

Remarks :

All campus has its own odds and evens. Although ISM is a brand in itself, which is also an IIT now, some research facilities and environmental is still missing. This institution provides excellent exposure to the industry. Many mining and exploration industries including the Geological Survey of India, choose IIT (ISM) Dhanbad for training their employees in several fields. The Geology, Mining and Geophysics departments are one of the best in the country. Mineral engineering and Mining Machinery engineering departments are probably unique in the country.

Course Curriculum Overview :

The course structure of is inclined towards the industry. Most of the subjects taught is very much useful after getting into an industry that deals with the specific subjects (mineral and oil exploration and mining in my case). Although it is beneficial for people interested in research also, it is more beneficial for those who want to join the industry. Examination structure is a regular semester system with two mid semesters and two semesters in a year. Also we have quiz and assignments that contain some marks throughout the year in every subject.

Placement Experience :

Placement and job opportunities is excellent in my institute. We have Microsoft, Samsung, ONGC, Goldman Sachs, etc., recruiting every year for internship as well as jobs. I got an opportunity to visit DR Congo for a metal mining company based in Africa. It was a wonderful experience and a fully funded month long internship.

College Events :

There are many social and arts clubs which celebrate a lot of events throughout the year. Some noteworthy are: 1) Srijan. It is the largest cultural fest in this part of the country. It invites a lot of national and international performers in every sector of arts and music. 2) Basant. It is the annual reunion of the institute. It invites the 50 year old batch every year as special guests. Apart from that there are several events and performances that take place. 3) Concetto. It is the technical fest of the institute which invites speaker from throughout the globe who host workshops. The events that the students participate in include robotics, astrophysics, etc. The Concetto'19 is due a few days and the guest this year is Gabe Gabrielle, an engineer from NASA. 4) Khanan. Annual meet of the mining department. 5) AAPG Student Chapter. Annual meet of Geology department. Etc.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

Like all the IITs, it is higher than the other colleges, but lesser than the fancy private colleges at the same time. The fee structure varies for different courses. For basic sciences it is lower than the B.Tech. courses.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

There are many scholarships that the institute offers to the students. I avail a scholarship which refunds me the tution fees that I pay per semester plus some amount per month. There are lots of other scholarship as well, some in collaboration with the industries and some solely offered by the institute. The SBI branch in our institute offers easy access loan to the students, but there are no special facilities as such.

Campus Life :

The extracurricular activities is solely dependent on the students. All the facilities have been provided, proper use by us is due. The facilities include Cricket Football Basketball Hockey Handball Athletics Lawn tennis Table tennis Squash Badminton Pool Boxing Karate Gymnasium Etc.

Hostel Facilities :

The hostel is pretty basic which covers all the basic requirements. The maintenance is good. Any complain regarding malfunctioning of anything in the hostel is very well attended. Also the quality of food served is good. There is a student body in every hostel that has the authority to look after the cleanliness and food quality of the mess.

Alumni/Alumna :

This is the back bone of the Indian School of Mines. The interaction with the on campus seniors is excellent. And the ones in the industries provide the maximum possible help during internships and placements. They take care of accomodation, food and everything possible from their side. The internship that I went for was an opportunity extended by an ex-student of our institute.

Admission :

Through the rank secured in all India entrance examination conducted by the institute in 2017. First the merit list is published and the offer letter is sent to the selected students. Then on a fixed date we had to report at the institute for physical verification of documents and enrollment. (Since 2018 the institute is taking students from JAM which is the entrance test for post graduation in basic sciences in IITs)

Faculty :

The faculty in our college is a perfect combination of extremely experienced as well as new comers. All the Professor level facilities are extremely in experienced with good contact with the industries. Every year many faculties of our institute receive prestigious national and international awards and projects. But of course not everyone is good, which according to me is pretty understandable. Not all good researcher is a good teacher and vice versa.
