Should I join IIT Delhi chemical or top NIT CSE?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 1st, 2023

Yes, irrespective of the branch, choosing IIT Delhi will always prove to be beneficial for you. IIT Delhi has ties with many big firms that visit the campus for placements and offer great packages irrespective of your branch. One needs to be proficient in DSA and other computer science core subjects such as OOPS, OS, DBMS, and Computer Networks. A good grasp of these will fetch you a high-paying job no matter which branch you belong to in IIT Delhi.

Although most companies that visit IIT Delhi also visit NIT, your IIT tag will always fetch you extra benefits and no one can deny that. For instance, the same role offered to an IITiand will have more salary than that offered to a non-IITian.You can easily switch roles and fields given the brand name of the institute you are associated with. IITians even have more opportunities for higher studies in Foreign countries than non-IITians.

IITians especially from Mumbai or Delhi are always given preference over non-IITians hence it is advisable to go for IIT Delhi in any branch.

Which is better in terms of placements and all: IIT Roorkee chemical or IIT BHU chemical? Which has more liberal branch change rules: IIT Roorkee or IIT BHU?

N
Nisha Posted On : July 2nd, 2024
student at IIT Roorkee

I am a second year Chemical Engineering student at IIT Roorkee. Both IIT Roorkee and IIT BHU offer top notch placements. However, IIT Roorkee Chemical is a better option because of these reasons-

  • The NIRF Engineering ranking 2023 of IIT Roorkee is 5, while that of IIT BHU is 15.
  • IIT Roorkee has a stronger alumni network than IIT BHU. This can be beneficial for placements, internships, and career guidance.

The 2023 placement statistics of IIT Roorkee and IIT BHU are given below:

Parameters IIT Roorkee Overall IIT BHU Chemical
Placement Percentage - (63 Recruiters, 500 offers) 86.43%
Median CTC - INR 16.18 LPA
Average CTC - INR 19.52 LPA
Highest CTC INR 1.3 CPA (domestic)
INR 1.06 CPA (international)
INR 1.68 CPA (overall)
INR 1.15 CPA (Chemical)

(The branch-wise placement data for IIT Roorkee is not available).

The branch change policies are based on the academic performance of the students in their first year and the availability of seats in the desired branch. These are the branch change rules at IIT Roorkee and IIT BHU:

IIT Roorkee- A 9.0 or above CGPA is required for a branch change at IITR. Another thing is that the strength of the new branch should not increase by more than 10%. Moreover, the strength of the original branch must not fall by more than 25% of its existing strength.

IIT BHU- For IIT BHU, the required CGPA for branch change is around 8.5 to 9.0. IIT BHU might have a slightly more flexible approach, but it mainly depends on the number of students applying for the branch change and their respective CGPAs. Some branches may restrict the number of students who can transfer in.

Seat availability in the desired branch is a critical factor for branch switch at both institutions. IIT BHU might have a slightly more relaxed approach for branch change. But overall, switching a branch at both these IITs is a difficult task.

How is Chemical Engineering at NIT Surathkal?

SG
Shikha Ghosal Posted On : September 14th, 2023
Studied BTech in Computer Science, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal (2019)

The Chemical Engineering branch at NIT Surathkal isn’t well-known because of its obsolete curriculum and poor placement scenario. I hope you haven’t yet joined it but if you have known that there is no turning back. It’s better to start working hard to compensate for the poor branch than to sit and regret.

It’s better to opt for Chemical in Trichy or Warangal. Otherwise, you can study hard in the 1st year and opt for a branch change. Even if you fail to get CSE/IT, even civil and mining will do.

I have many friends who joined this department recently and all of them are regretting their decision big time. Some even call it the worst in the institution. So I will recommend you to go for Chemical in NIT Warangal instead.

Few of the core companies which recruited chemical engineering students in recent years are as follows.

  • Vedanta Resources
  • Reliance Industries Limited
  • Reliance Petrochemicals
  • BORL
  • Heidelberg Cement
  • LAFARGE Cement
  • Fiat and several others.

Besides, along with all these, students also get their placements in certain non-core companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Pradan, and more.

Which is better, IIT Delhi (chemical) or BITS Pilani (CSE)?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Irrespective of whichever Institute you go for, CSE is the most demanded branch today and has the best pay scale and job prospects. So, if it’s placements you are after, then BITS Pilani CSE is the right choice for you.

However, if you want to become an entrepreneur then Delhi being the capital is the absolute best place for you. Choosing IIT Delhi on the pretext of learning coding in the last year is a wrong mindset and at the end of the day, you will find yourself with little exposure and knowledge than those who learned coding for 4 years.

Make a well-informed decision considering the pros and cons of both institutes and courses.

My rank in the JEE mains is 50000. Should I go for the chemical branch in NIT Raipur?

AM
Aditya Mishra Posted On : September 9th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Raipur

Yes, you can go for the Chemical branch at NIT Raipur unless you get selected for a better NIT till the last round. Even if you aren’t interested in Chemical Engineering, you need not worry as NIT Raipur has a branch change policy that lets you upgrade your branch to a better one after one year. You need a good CGPA and enough vacant Seeta in the desired branch to make this possible. Many of my friends at NIT Raipur have upgraded their branches from chemical to IT, Electrical, and Civil.

Usually, the students of this branch are hired by mass recruiters. These companies offer jobs in various fields in case you don’t want to continue working in the Chemical field. Last year, the Chemical Engineering branch received 54 offers and the total number of students eligible for placements was 55.

In all, NIT Raipur is a decent choice given its high-paced development rate.

How is Chemical Engineering at MANIT Bhopal?

PS
Parveen Sindhu Posted On : April 22nd, 2023
Studied at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, Bhopal

If you are considering the Chemical Engineering Department at MANIT Bhopal, here are some pros and cons based on the experience of a current student:

Pros:

  • The department has relatively small class sizes of around 60 students. This allows for more one-on-one interaction with professors, similar to what you may have experienced in school.
  • The HOD (Head of Department) and senior faculty members are helpful and care about the interests of students.
  • Despite being a newer department (started around 10 years ago), the Chemical Engineering Department has maintained decent placement records.
  • Compared to other departments, there are fewer classes, giving you more time for yourself to prepare for future prospects such as GATE, CAT, GRE, etc.
  • The department has better infrastructure than many other departments at MANIT, and the labs have continuously improved over the past few years.

Cons:

  • There are no professors in the Chemical Engineering Department, only Assistant Professors. This can lower the standard of education, which may not be what one would expect from an NIT.
  • Most of the courses are taught by Contract Faculties who can be rude, non-qualified, and excessively egoistic.
  • The department has a skewed relative grading system where no one gets a perfect 10 in any subject, even if they score as high as 97/98. This diminishes the point of having a relative grading system.
  • There is no library in the department, and even the college library is in a state of extreme disarray.

Overall, if you are considering the Chemical Engineering Department at MANIT, it is important to weigh the pros and cons mentioned above. While the department has small class sizes, helpful senior faculty members, and decent placements, it also has a lack of professors, rude contract faculties, a skewed grading system, and a lack of library resources.
