How are the placements of Ceramic Engineering at IIT BHU?
IIT BHU placements are decent for Ceramic Engineering. But very few students get core placements. Tata Steel is among the core recruiters that take part in the campus drive.
Most students are recruited in non-core job profiles such as Software Developer, Data Scientist, etc. The highest CTC offered for the students of this branch is around INR 38 LPA.
How was the placement of ceramic engineering in NIT rourkela?
Ceramic Engineering is one of the least preferred branches in NIT Rourkela because of its limited scope and job opportunities. Moreover, it lacks demand in the country as of now. However, the scenario is slowly improving. Quite a few core companies like Vedant, TRL, OCL, etc visit for placements. Additionally, students of this branch can sit for companies from the IT sector as well as analytics so the opportunities offered in non-core jobs are plentiful.
I asked a senior about the placement scenario and he told me that in his batch, 80% of the students got placed. The highest stipend offered was Rs. 35,000 per month, and the lowest stipend offered was Rs. 7,000 per month. A few major recruiters included Vedanta, Sera, Somani, Jindal Steel, etc. In 2020, the highest package offered was 42 LPA , while the average package offered was 8.75 LPA . These salary packages are improving every year due to increasing demand. Most of the students from core branches got placements, while the rest of the students opt for higher studies.
Overall, the placement of Ceramic engineering at NIT Rourkela is great.
How is the ceramics department at IIT BHU?
My friend, like any other student, took IIT BHU Ceramic on the pretext of changing his branch. But the overall college life experience took him in awe and he lost focus on academics. Additionally, his batch was full of geniuses and he was unable to cope with the academic rigor. Only 10% of the branch is allowed to change their branch so there is tough competition making it very difficult. Ultimately he was unable to change his branch and was very disheartened.
But soon he started getting intrigued by the branch and gained interest in the same. Honestly, there are many ceramic engineering graduates excelling in almost every field today. The course structure is very flexible and gives you enough free time to prepare for competitive exams like Civils, CAT, GRE, GMAT, etc. At Least one student from every branch is able to make it into IIM Ahmedabad. However, in India, there is a dearth of opportunities in this branch, and professors from foreign countries are seeking young talents in the field. There are special vacancies for ceramic graduates in SAIL, EIL, RINL, and Mecon. Many students of the branch also establish their own startups.
My friend was very demotivated initially but after 4 lively years at the campus, interactions with the best professors, and excellent job opportunities he realized that Ceramic was the best option for him indeed.
How about B.Tech ceramic engineering in NIT Rourkela?
Ceramic Engineering is a good branch. My brother is a Ceramic Engineer and an alumnus of NIT Rourkela.
The faculty for Ceramic at NIT Rourkela is good. Since the number of students in Ceramic is comparatively small, the teachers are able to pay attention to each and every one of them. The assignment load is quite small and the seniors of Ceramic are very helpful.
As far as placements are concerned, students who work hard during the four years of their B.Tech get placement offers from core companies like Vedanta, Tata, etc. with a good package of more than 9-10 LPA. This is the best branch for MBA aspirants.
Thus, Ceramic Engineering from NIT Rourkela is a good choice. It is the best branch for those who wish to make the most of their Engineering life.
Which is advisable, ceramic engineering at NIT, Rourkela or mechanical engineering at VSSUT, Burla?
Here is a comparison between Ceramic Engineering at NIT Rourkela and Mechanical at VSSUT-
- Brand Name- NIT Rourkela carries the NIT tag and has a bigger brand name than VSSUT. NIT R ranks higher than VSSUT in various rankings.
- Placements- Placements for Mechanical at VSSUT are good. Core companies like TATA Steel, Hyundai, Vedanta, and Hindalco visit VSSUT for placements and offer good packages. However, due to high competition only around 40% ME students get into core companies. Around 40% of students from Ceramic at NIT Rourkela are placed in core companies. The number of students in Ceramic is small so the competition is less. Non-core companies also offer placements to Ceramic students in various sectors like Analytics, Trading, and Coaching. A few startups also visit for recruitment.
- Research Scope- NIT Rourkela has better research facilities than VSSUT. As Ceramics is related to materials, it has a lot of research scope. You can go for a foreign internship after your 3rd year or opt for an MS after your B.Tech. Getting a foreign research internship or an MS seat is easier for a NITian.
- Campus - The campuses of both are quite big. However, NIT Rourkela has a bigger, better, and more developed campus. The cleanliness and other facilities at NIT R hostels are better than VSSUT hostels.
- Fests and Other Activities- Though VSSUT has good fests, the fests of NIT R are far superior. NIT R has a great club culture. There is a club for everything at NIT R, including Robotics, Entrepreneurship, Media, Dance, Drama, Debate, Art, Music, Social Work, etc. NIT R also has a big swimming pool, two stadiums with floodlights, a Tennis court, a Basketball court, and around six gyms.
Based on these parameters, I would recommend you join Ceramics at NIT Rourkela. However, I would also suggest you talk to the alumni of both colleges before arriving at a decision.
Which is better: NIT, Durgapur computer science or IIT BHU for ceramic engineering?
Making a choice between two different institutes offering two different courses is always difficult. Both NIT Durgapur and IIT BHU are reputed institutes and offers decent placement, so choose according to the branch you are interested in.
NIT Durgapur is a prestigious institute among the NITs of India. It ranks 47 among the engineering colleges in India according to the NIRF Rankings 2020. The placement statistics of 2019 at this institute revels, the CES department had a placement rate of 88.64%, and 78 students out of 88 got placed. The average CTC offered was around 9.09 LPA.
NIRF ranked IIT BHU at 11 among the engineering colleges. IIT BHU also holds a decent placement record. In 2019 campus placement a total of 49 students got placed from the Ceramic Engineering Department. The average CTC ranged around 10 LPA to 58 LPA. Besides core companies, students can also sit for software companies that come for placement in this institute which is an added advantage.
Being an IIT, IIT BHU offers certain perks but as a course, CSE has better scope than Ceramic Engineering.

Ceramic Engineering Department :
- About the Department: The Department is pursuing research in the emerging areas of glass, glass ceramics, refractories, electronic ceramic, cement, pottery, and porcelain. Research papers are published in reputed national and international journals. Many R&D projects of this department were sponsored by AICTE, DST, CSIR, and UGC.
- Course Structure:Some specific properties of ceramic materials lay the foundation for many applications in electrical, chemical, and mechanical engineering.
- Placements:Placements are good as the average package is nearly 10 lakhs. Apart from core jobs, students go for jobs in non-core fields like analytics, Management, and Consultancy too. In the 2019 placement drive 43 students from the Ceramic department got placed.
Mining Engineering :
- About the Department:It is one of the oldest and comprehensive mining engineering departments in the country. It came into existence in 1923, as a section of the Department of Geology, Mining, and Metallurgy. This department was one of the first few departments in the country to receive UGC Assistance under COSIST and SAP Programme in 1984.
- Course Structure:The course structure of mining is a combination of courses from mechanical, electrical, electronics, earth sciences, and even computer science departments. Physics and machine knowledge is involved.
- Placements: Placements are usually good. Students are offered both core and non-core jobs. The non-core jobs are usually from finance, marketing, analyst, coding. 85 students got placement from Mining last year.
Pharmaceuticals :
- About the Department:The courses are designed to impart knowledge on various aspects of drug design, development, testing, and safe and effective use of drugs/medicines, including drug delivery systems.
- Course Structure:This program includes subjects like medical chemistry, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, jurisprudence, management, pharmacology, pharmacognosy, technology. The course is pervasive and makes one ready for advancing in the field of medicine despite being an engineer.
- Placements:Top recruiters from this branch include Dr.Reddy's laboratories, Matrix Laboratories, United Health, Evaluserve are regular visitors. Apart from that, students have a lot of options for non-core employment in marketing, finance, coding, analytic, etc. A total of 39 students got placed from Pharmaceutical Engineering.
