PG Diploma English Journalism, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Dhenkanal (2008)

Though almost every candidate has his first preference for the Delhi campus of IIMC, it is no better than the Dhenkanal campus. The courses taught at IIMC cover a large number of things but none of the topics are covered properly. After the course, you will know a lot of things, but nothing to the core.

The points listed below create an imagery of the Dhenkanal campus of IIMC.

  • It has a spacious campus and fewer students (about 85), with lush green forest, clean air, and buildings of an average infrastructure.
  • The months of March and April in these buildings are quite dreadful.
  • Wi-Fi is not at all good and half of the time there will be no internet access.
  • There are complaints about the toilets from almost every student. Students have to rush to their hostel to use the toilet.
  • Dhenkanal has average medical facilities, where doctors treat every other disease with an injection.
  • The hostel is quite spacious but the students face problems like monkeys stealing things, scorpions and snakes are seen sometimes. The hostel warden and staff are not supportive in need.
  • Food inside the hostel has a diminishing quality with time. There are also food joints nearby such as Kafils, RK Regency, Nirupama, etc.
  • English and Oriya Journalism share the same class and faculties. Most faculties are temporary or visiting staff. They teach for a period of 3-4 days.
  • You should try to keep a good margin of attendance during our initial days. So, that you don’t get in trouble for low attendance after.
  • The faculty lacks a serious set of professors who can teach for an entire session and the management takes no necessary steps for the purpose. The teaching faculty is said to just make presentations and deliver them to students, which is not at all a productive way of teaching.
  • You have to make all the necessary preparations by yourself for the theory exams. The software for radio/DR/TV/lab journals is not as promised by the institute. You have to cover every practical knowledge too on your own, practical being 3/4th of the entire course.
  • Classes run from 9:30 to 6:30, with 70% of no gain.
  • The inward behavior of the management and faculty has some sort of backwardness in racism and discrimination in gender too. There have been instances of problems for dress related judgment.

But, due to IIMC fame, the degree has value. In terms of knowledge gained, it is not worth it. Private institutes like ACJ are said to be better but the course fee is quite expensive. To end on a good note, you will meet people from different parts of the country and that is bigger teaching in itself.
