How is the MBA program at BITS Pilani?

SG
Shayash Gupta Posted On : June 27th, 2023
PhD from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (2016)

The two-year on-campus MBA in Business Analytics program at BITS Pilani is offered through its Department of Management (DOM) at the Pilani campus. The program was launched in the academic year 2021-22.

BITS Pilani MBA program is not well known among many MBA aspirants and the number of students it attracts is considerably less. Although the program has been improving every year to meet industry demand and attract more students. It can be easily compared to the MBA program of IITs. Here are a few e pros and cons of the program

Pros

  • The 2 years program fee for MBA in Business Analytics at BITS Pilani is Rs.12 lakhs, which is lower than most of the top MBA programs offered in India.
  • BITS Pilani MBA has three Semesters of rigorous on-campus training coupled with an option of either 6 months’ exposure to the industry through a structured Paid Internship (Practice School) or a Dissertation. So you gain work experience alongside studying.
  • The students are allowed to sit for university placements and thus the placements have improved tremendously The highest salary of the 2021-2023 batch was INR 22 LPA and the average package was recorded at INR 15.9 LPA. Some of the top recruiters at BITS Pilani include Accenture, Cognizant, Toyota, Bombardier, Maybank, Zomato, HolidayIQ, KPMG, IndiaMART, etc
  • The low batch strength ensures individual attention to all students.

Cons

  • The program is less popular among MBA aspirants
  • The faculty pool is small and more professors are needed to handle the program well.
  • The institute faces a location disadvantage.
  • The program is not suitable for those with work experience of more than 3-4 years.
  • Needs to add more electives to ensure flexibility in the curriculum.

Overall, the program is a good choice for freshers but not for experienced professionals.

What is the difference between IIT and BITS Pilani?

DH
Damini Hedge Posted On : June 27th, 2023

Here are a few basic points of difference between IIT and BITS Pilani.

  • The competition at IITs is more intense than at BITS Pilani as it attracts better peers
  • The cultural, sports and tech clubs are active in both institutes so I dont think they are comparable. BITS Goa even has club outings to beaches and treks.
  • BITS Pilani has a very hectic academic environment here, especially in the first year. The duration of semesters is longer in the first year and studies take place 6 days a week against IIT Bombays 5 days a week.
  • IITs have strict campus and hostel rules while life at BITS is comparatively relaxed and free of restrictions giving a sense of freedom to its students.
  • BITS Pilani has slightly better placements with an average package of around INR 30.37 LPA against IIT Bombay's average package of INR 23.26 LPA.
  • The hostel facilities of BITS are way better than the old IIts though the mess food is somewhat similar. IIT Bombay has better sports facilities in comparison to BITS.
  • BITS Pilani has an excellent coding culture and its large number of GSoC selections is a testament to the same.
  • BITS has a no-attendance policy while IIT Bombay has a 75–80% attendance rule in a few courses.
  • BITS Pilani fees are as high as ?5.42 Lakhs for the first year alone while IIT Bombay fees are INR 218500 for the first year. BITS fees are almost double IIT fees.
  • BITS Pilani has a no-reservation policy thus the students are equally smart and have been admitted solely on the basis of merit. IITs on the other hand have a reservation policy and thus the student body is a mixed bag of toppers and average students.
  • IIT Bombay has a better research culture than BITS Pilani.

Overall both BITS and old IITs have their unique strengths and weaknesses and the ultimate decision should be on the basis of your personal preferences.

Should I study CSE at BITS Pilani or CSE at IIT (BHU)?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : June 16th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

The CSE programs of both BITS Pilani and IIT BHU are equally good but in different aspects.

IIT BHU

  • This institute was established even before IITs came into the picture and holds a rich legacy of technical education.
  • It has extensive lab and campus facilities being one of the top 5 IITs.
  • The faculty pool is also rich, comprising highly experienced and learned professors.
  • Studying at IIT BHU gives you access to the elaborate alumni network and the much coveted IIT tag that will open doors of opportunities for you academically or professionally.

BITS Pilani

  • Placements-wise, BITS Pilani is clearly a winner as it has the best companies visiting the campus with huge packages. BITS Pilani average package is around INR 30.37 LPA while IIT BHU's average package is around INR 23.5 LPA.
  • BITS Pilani hostel facilities are way superior to most IITs and is a private institute with the best facilities.
  • The top recruiters don’t differentiate IIT and BITS students and it’s only the biased society with a narrow mindset that considers IIT superior to BITS.

In conclusion, if it’s the branch name and tag you are after, go for IIT BHU but if you are after education and better placements, BITS Pilani is the best option for you.

Should I study CSE at BITS Pilani or CSE at IIT BHU?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : March 24th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

When deciding between IIT BHU and BITS Pilani, it's important to consider both colleges from different perspectives. Both institutions have their own strengths, and making a decision between the two can be challenging. Here are some important things to consider about each institution:

IIT BHU:

It is considered one of the top IITs after the top five IITs in India. It has a vast infrastructure and lab facilities because of its affiliation with Banaras Hindu University (BHU). It has a long history of excellence in education and has been around for longer than some of the other IITs. It has some of the best faculties among all the IITs. Most importantly, getting an IIT tag from IIT BHU can help you in many ways throughout your life, such as impressing people and carrying it to foreign colleges and companies.

BITS Pilani:

When it comes to placement and package, BITS Pilani is considered superior to IIT BHU. Its placements are often higher than even the top IITs. The hostel facilities available at BITS Pilani are unmatched by any IIT. Even recruiters do not make a distinction between IITs and BITS Pilani when it comes to reputation.

Here are some more reasons why IIT BHU could be the right choice for you:

  • IIT BHU is part of the prestigious IIT league, which is considered the most prestigious group of engineering institutions in India.
  • Don't fall into the trap of people who might say that the IIT tag won't matter or that IITs are fake or the worst. The IIT tag can help you in many ways you might not have even thought of.
  • IIT BHU has a far better placement than BITS Pilani.
  • Being part of the IIT league means that you can explore yourself with other IITs by participating in inter-IIT tech, sports meets or other inter-IIT meets.
  • IIT has more brand value than BITS Pilani.
  • IITs charge fewer fees than BITS Pilani.
  • IITs have bigger and better alumni bases than BITS Pilani.
  • IITs are well-known and have a more international reputation than BITS Pilani.

Ultimately, the choice between IIT BHU and BITS Pilani will depend on your individual needs and goals. It is important to weigh the pros and cons of each institution and consider your future aspirations when making your decision.

Why doesn't Apple Inc. recruit engineers from India (even from IITs, BITS Pilani, NITs and IIIT-H)?

DD
Devendra Dharani Posted On : June 27th, 2023
M.tech at IIT Hyderabad

Apple Inc. does recruit engineers from India, including from top institutions such as IITs, BITS, NITs, and IIITs. They have a dedicated team in India to find and recruit top talent from around the country. However, like any other company, they have certain criteria and standards that they look for in candidates, and they also have a limited number of open positions at any given time.

Therefore, even if an individual is highly qualified and comes from a prestigious institution, they may not be selected for a role at Apple.

Apple initially hired students from IIIT Hyderabad because its head office is situated in Hyderabad. After this, Apple started approaching old IITs and even top NITs such as Trichy, Surathkal, and Warangal. You will be surprised to know that now Apple even visits BITS Pilani, Goa, and Hyderabad Campuses.

So you can rest assured as Apple is now recruiting actively from top technical institutes of the country.

Are there donation seats in BITS Pilani?

HV
Harish Verma Posted On : June 27th, 2023
Studied at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani - Pilani Campus

No, there are no donation seats in BITS Pilani and all the students are admitted solely on the basis of merit. In fact, my friend told me about an incident here that further proved that BITS Pilani has no donation seats. A very rich person wanted his son to get admitted here and was willing to give a hefty donation for the same. The director of BITS Pilani strongly refused saying they accept students on a merit basis only and no amount of money will get him a seat no matter what.

This brought to light the transparency of admissions here and strengthened my faith in BITS Pilani.

Why does BITS Pilani have such a low average CGPA?

SD
Shruti Dasgupta Posted On : June 27th, 2023
Student at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani

Your grades don't necessarily determine your skills and capabilities. I have seen many low graders who are successful today thanks to the excellent exposure and opportunities they got at BITS Pilani. In fact, one of my friends even claims that BITS Pilani alumni have something charming about them that is missing in IITians. I attribute this to the splendid campus life of this institute.

Life here is so dynamic and indulging that without even realizing your personality is groomed and you become a different person when you graduate. A close friend of mine had a very low CGPA and had almost given up on MS or Ph.D. After working for a couple of years he finally apple for one and got selected in the US. He realized his BITS tag and the knowledge he gained there gave him an edge over other batchmates.

So yes grades do matter but only to a certain extent. Ultimately it is your hard work and consistency that makes you successful and stands apart from the crowd.

How do average middle class students who crack BITSAT manage to pay BITS Pilani's very large fee?

AM
Aditi Mukharjee Posted On : June 27th, 2023
studied at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani

My cousin hailed from a middle-class family and cleared BITSAT in one go. His father somehow managed to pay the fees for the first semester.

After joining he approached the SBI stall and found out about the educational loans they were offering. Ever since then whenever he received a fee demand form, he submitted it to the bank that took care of his entire college fee including food and accommodation. He did not have to spend any money except for his personal expenses. The scholarships are given solely on the basis of merit here.

However, BITS Pilani fees face a hike every year so I don’t think the ROI of non-CS branches is worth being considered by middle-class families.

What is the concept of dual degree in BITS? Is it better than single B.E(Hons) degree?

PS
Prateek Sharma Posted On : June 27th, 2023
studied at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani

BITS Pilani BE courses have a duration of 4 years while the dual degree courses have a duration of 5 years. A few dual courses offered at BITS Pilani include Msc. (Hons) Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics, and Physics.

  1. The courses taught in the first year are the same in both BE and dual degrees. Based on your CGPA of the first year and your preferences, all the dualities will be allotted their respective BE degrees.
  2. From the second year, BE students start studying their own separate courses while Msc students start studying their compulsory courses for their Msc degree.
  3.  In the third year dual degree students start studying BE degree with their juniors along with their Msc.
  4. In the fourth year, they only study the compulsory courses of BE.
  5. In the fifth year dual degree students will either complete their thesis or PS or both. Students are required to complete their electives by the end of graduation apart from their compulsory subjects

Basically, dual degree students pursue BE with their juniors.

Here are a few pros and cons of the institute to help you understand the credibility of this degree.

Pros

  • It's a good option if you failed to get a branch of your choice in BE. Work hard in the first year and get a good CGPA to opt for your desired branch.
  • An MSc is beneficial in fetching good placement offers. A very popular combination among recruiters is Msc Economics + CS.
  • You get to enjoy college life for an extra year and create more memories.

Cons

  • An extra year means you will have to invest more money and time.
  • The third and fourth years will be very hectic given that you will have to do compulsory courses alongside completing electives too.
  • It will be very difficult to sit for placements if you opt for double semester PS in your final year.

In all, I think the dual degree program is a great choice for those who did not get their desired branch in BE.
