How many years are needed to complete a PhD (mechanical) at IIT Guwahati?

B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (2022)

A Ph.D. (mechanical) at IT Guwahati typically takes around 5-6 years to complete. There is no fixed time limit to complete a PhD at IIT Guwahati as there are several factors that affect your PhD degree. My friend submitted his thesis last December and it’s still under review. It has almost been 7 years and he is expecting his PhD in the near future. Many of his batchmates are still working on the thesis and very few have submitted it. Many seniors completed their Ph.D. exceptionally early within 2-3 years.

Talking about Mechanicals specifically, the average time taken to get a Ph.D. is about 5–6 years no irrespective of your previous degree. However, the situation might be different if you have done MTech from the same institute.

On average, it takes 5–6 years of intense hard work to get a Ph.D. from IIT Guwahati.

Ph. D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)

A Ph.D. student at IIT Kharagpur experiences another side of life at IIT that is way different from the classroom life of a student. You get to use extremely expensive, sophisticated, and fancy lab equipment under the guidance of learned professors who are experts. You can access expensive software and computational equipment free of cost.

Usually, the Ph.D. coursework training is very interesting like any other institute. The distinguishing feature is the exceptionally good faculty members you get to work under. They are quite approachable and guide you throughout in such a way that you are ready to face the challenges of the field in real life.

Comprehensive vivas are extremely tiring and one could get interviewed for hours on end until the DSC committee is satisfied. But the bright side is that the faculty is always approachable and becomes your role model as you pave your way through your thesis. The only thing you require is relentless efforts to score the best and satisfy your faculty advisor.

VNIT Nagpur is a better option for CS. The CS department has excellent professors. The labs are well-equipped to carry out research projects. The institute organizes many coding related events throughout the academic year. If you are interested in a professor's area of research, you can approach them about it.
