New Delhi: The Supreme Court has ruled that the students of open schools recognised by CBSE and state education boards will be eligible to sit for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
As a result of this order by the Supreme Court, the students passing their 10+2 class from open school boards will now be able to apply for NEET exam. This inturn increases the inclusivity of the students to pursue their aspiration of becoming a medical professional.
A bench of Justices P S Narsimha and Aravind Kumar noted that the National Medical Council has already issued a public notice stating that all open schools recognized by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and State Education Boards shall be considered for recognition by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for NEET.

While disposing of the appeal, the top court, in its order passed on Monday, stated, "In view of the above-referred letter and Public Notice, it is clear that open schools recognized by CBSE and State Education Boards shall be recognised by the National Medical Council for the purpose of taking the NEET Examination."
Moreover, in alignment with this inclusive approach, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has revised its Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023. The revised NEET eligibility criteria for 2024 eliminates the upper age limit for candidates and introduces new reservation criteria for various categories, including OBC, EWS, SC, ST, and PwD, under the 15% All India Quota seats.
