IIT Guwahati and Armed Forces to Offer Innovative Program on Drone Technology

New Delhi: IIT Guwahati has launched a three-month training program on Drone Technology designed for Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Other Ranks Officers (OR). This initiative aims to modernise the armed forces' operational approaches by equipping them with advanced drone operation skills and tools.

This program will be implemented by the Centre for Educational Technology (CET), Centre for Intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems (CICPS), Centre for Drone Technology and IIT Guwahati Technology Innovation and Development Foundation (IITG TIDF).

Prof. T. V. Bharat, Head of the Centre for Educational Technology, IIT Guwahati, said, “IIT Guwahati, is offering a certificate program on Drone Technology-related course to the defence forces for the first time in the country to skill the armed forces with this upcoming technology and to boost their career opportunities post-retirement for senior officers”.

“The current training program by faculty from different departments and centers with wide experience would provide numerous opportunities as entrepreneurs or any other technology-based second career to our defence forces”, he added.

About Certificate Program on Drone Technology

The current session of the Drone Technology Program accommodates 30 individuals from diverse armed forces backgrounds. The curriculum has been meticulously designed to blend theoretical foundations with practical application. 

The theoretical modules cover essential subjects such as Mathematics, Computing Foundation, Drone Technology, Basics of Electrical, Electronics & Mechanical Engineering, and Applied Engineering.

Practical training takes precedence, focusing on hands-on experiences encompassing Flight Simulator utilisation, Basic Assembly, Risk Assessment and analysis, Drone Equipment Maintenance, Payload Installation and Utilisation, and an Introduction to Drone Data and analysis. Furthermore, components like Robotics, 3D Printing, Practical Flight under guidance, and Independent Flying are pivotal aspects of this unique program.
