New Delhi: As per the latest updates, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has appointed Prof. Devendra Jalihal as Director on May 15, 2024. He will now take charge from Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, who held the position and additional charge from November 2023.
As a new Director of IIT Guwahati, Professor Devendra aims to make the institute a hub for cutting-edge research, innovation and academics. Before this, Prof. Devendra Jalihal served at IIT Madras as a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering.
Expressing his honour on taking the new role, the Director of IIT Guwahati, Prof. Devendra Jalihal said, “IIT Guwahati is a prestigious institution ranked consistently among the top 10 by the NIRF Rankings and high research citation rank of 32 in QS world rankings. Situated in one of the most biodiverse and economically dynamic locations of the country, this region has experienced rapid infrastructure development, skill enhancement, and industrial growth”.
He further shared that under this guidance, the institute will reach new goals and focus on bridging the gap between academia and industry through various initiatives. As the only IIT in the northeast region, IIT Guwahati will lead technological development and work to fulfil the aspirations of its stakeholders.
More About Professor Devendra Jalihal
Before starting his career, Professor Devendra completed his BTech (Hons) from IIT Kanpur in 1983 followed by Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Duke University, Durham, USA in 1992.
After completing his education, he joined IIT Madras as the Head of Department (HoD) of Department of Electrical Engineering in 2016 and served the position till 2019. He then joined the Centre for Outreach and Digital Education at IIT Madras and oversaw the outreach activities at the institute.
In addition to his roles at IIT Madras, Professor Jalihal has worked on various projects covering domains as low-bit-rate video conferencing, tactical communication systems, disaster management communication systems, and satellite communication networks. His interests include digital signal processing, wireless communication, real-time voice and video communication, and societal applications of wireless technologies.
