The Educational Testing Service is likely to announce personalized TOEFL tests based on the individual requirements of the applicants. This new introduction has been added so that you can take the test based on your academic degree and the difficulty level of the questions will be set accordingly. A personalized TOEFL test will be launched so that the test is conducted in an unbiased manner. Rather than adhering to the rigid test structure, the personalized TOEFL test will adjust its content and difficulty level based on your proficiency level. This has been made to ensure that you are evaluated on your true language abilities.

One of the key features of the personalized TOEFL test is its adaptability. You will have the freedom to choose from a wide range of modules that align with your academic goals and background. Whether you excel in academic writing or business communications, you can take the test according to your specific needs. The advanced algorithm will ensure a seamless scoring of your results and personalized feedback. The new format of the test also has increased the use of Artificial Intelligence, which will enable the test to learn from each different interaction with test-takers in the long run.

Personalized TOEFL Test Based on Academic Background

TOEFL test for specific academic backgrounds helps you to meet the specific requirements of your goals. For example, the TOEFL test for someone with an Indian background will not be the same for a student with a German background. However, it would be beneficial if you could specify your needs like you are applying for a journalism program and the test will adapt to test higher levels of writing skills. Students from India might be strong in written English but need improvement in spoken English. Personalized tests are likely to be rolled out in 24 to 36 months. This also involved the institutions adopting and paying for differentiated tests and breaking free from the standardized testing method. This sudden move toward the personalized test, driven by AI, will address individual linguistic requirements.

Effect on the TOEFL test takers

The to-be-introduced personalized TOEFL test will likely affect the test takers in terms of their aspirations, and sudden break free from the traditional standardized testing method.

  • Personalization based on aspirations - this significant change in the TOEFL testing format will now allow you to communicate your needs freely and allow the test to adapt accordingly. For instance, if you want to go for a business-related course, you can expect a higher level of speaking skill test in the speaking section. This approach creates a more beneficial and relevant testing experience.
  •  Breaking free from the standardized test method - the expected time of 24 to 36 months of the rollout of the personalized test involves the institutions and universities to adapt to the differentiated evaluations. This framework aims to convey that there are many linguistic proficiency levels, and a singular approach may not capture the skills and abilities of your background.

Impact on the TOEFL test structure

The introduction of the personalized TOEFL test also creates an impact on the TOEFL test structure in the aspects of test duration the number of tasks and the incorporation of AI.

  • Reducing the test duration and the release of official score reports: the reduction of the duration of the test to less than 2 hours and the smaller number of tasks has made it efficient for test takers. Moreover, the provision of official score release dates immediately after the test enhances transparency, offering you a clearer understanding of your performance and reducing post-exam uncertainties.
  • Increasing the usage of AI: ETS recently has been incorporating more advanced technology and AI in the TOEFL test network. This ensures strong security concerning the TOEFL test, and the prevention of cheating, especially in the home edition. The extension of the AI also enables the introduction of more enhanced preparation materials.

The announcement by ETS to introduce personalized TOEFL tests is a strategic approach towards ensuring a more transparent and relevant language testing system. This method will enable the test takers to take the test that aligns with their academic backgrounds.
