CBSE introduces an open-book exam for students in classes 9th to 12th. The exam will be conducted for six subjects. The initiative is as per the recommendation of NCFSE 2023.

New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will conduct open book exams 2024 for students in Classes 9 to 12. As a pilot project, these exams will cover six subjects. The initial open-book tests will be conducted for English, science, and mathematics for Classes 9 and 10. For Classes 11 and 12, the subjects will be English, mathematics, and biology.
CBSE will conduct a pilot test in schools in November this year to evaluate their effectiveness. This decision was made during a board meeting in December last year. Professor Radhey Shyam proposed that teachers take the open book exams first. At the same time, Professor Jyoti Sharma suggested using the Advanced Placement (AP) exams from the United States as a reference for preparing the tests.
In a meeting, the director of academic assessments explained that the board will develop open-book exam content focusing on higher-order thinking skills, analysis of various aspects, and application in a practical world influenced by critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving ability.
National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023 Recommendations
The NCFSE 2023 has recommended open-book tests for higher secondary classes. It will also gather feedback from students, parents, teachers, and other stakeholders. The pilot test will assess students' time and determine whether the assessment type is suitable for formative or summative evaluations.
Understanding the CBSE Open Book Exam 2024
In this exam, students can answer questions using textbooks and approved materials. Institutions like Delhi University (DU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) already use this assessment method. CBSE will consult with DU about the challenges of open-book exams.
Outcomes and Future Implementation
The CBSE Open Book Exam 2024 results will determine if this method can be used for secondary-stage assessments. CBSE plans to complete the open book tests' design, development, and review by June this year. The pilot run of these materials will take place in schools from November to December 2024.
