Dr. Rakesh T S is the Principal at GSSS Simha Subba Mahalakshmi First Grade College. He did his Ph.D. in Commerce from University of Mysore. He has overall 14 years of teaching experience. He has worked as facilities associates for 2 years in SDD Global solutions, Mysore and 6 months as marketing executive in Theorem India Pvt ltd, Mysore. At present, he is the member of article review committee in the Shodha journal and it is a multi- disciplinary refereed journal published biannually. He completed the UGC Minor Research Project titled ‘Increasing Rising SSIs in rural areas-an Evaluative study on soft drinks industry in Dakshina Kannada District,Karnataka’ during the year 2012 -2014 and has represented a total of 19 papers.

Ques. Being the Principal of GSSS Simha Subba Mahalakshmi First Grade College, what is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

Ans. My leadership style is very standard. I want to take everybody along with me. My leadership style is democratic. Every time I make a decision, I discuss it with everyone. I always listen to my colleagues and faculty members. We used to make decisions together. I believe in teamwork.

Ques. How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty? 

Ans. I am a very friendly person. I don’t believe in ruling and bossism. We also solicit feedback from students. If they want anything wrong, we try to convince them in a friendly manner. I don’t seclude myself. I am always available to my students as well as faculty members. This is how I used to build relationships.

Ques. What are your views on the placements and higher education of the students from your department or how does your department prepare students for higher education? 

Ans. Placement is very important when enrolling in any course. We used to give them proper training other than the curriculum as per their needs and requirements, like aptitude. We have collaborated with MOU and other colleges. Companies used to visit campus and take off the talent. We prepare the students continuously throughout the year by taking tests and conducting many competitions. We have an association with Bizotic Talent Solutions. They train on a regular basis. They used to take two sessions every week for placement, body language, aptitude, GD and PI, assessment, and other skills as required. Other than textbooks, we provide notes to the students and also take extra classes so that they can learn better.

Ques. Do you have any extracurricular activities/ programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?

Ans. For extracurricular activities, we have NCC and NSS. Also, there are various clubs like the Eco Club, Marketing Club, Finance Club, HR Club, BCA Club, etc. We used to organize various festivals, like cultural festivals. Various sports are there, like annual sports. Other than this Talent Day, there are competitions like essay writing, debate, hackathons, inter-class fests, state-level fests, etc.

Ques. What valuable advice would you like to the students for them to have a prosperous career ahead? 

Ans. My advice is to be conscious of what you’re doing. Listen to the elders who are already experienced, and then make a decision. But don’t depend on others. Based on your own capacity and strength, choose any course. Think practically and sensibly. Understand the market, and work accordingly.

Ques. What is the latest program that you are offering in your institute which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

Ans. Other than the normal course, we are offering GST, social entrepreneurship, and Python. Many lecturers used to come to the institute to take classes. We have a programme named Entrepreneur Business Talk. Various entrepreneurs come, and they talk about their businesses, real-life scenarios, and industries. The talk is about what is happening in the industry and how to overcome any situation.

Ques. How did you train yourself to deliver this program to the students?

Ans. As a faculty member, I keep on improving. I believe in hard work. Now I’m taking many courses from Coursera and Swayam to enhance my skills and knowledge. Being faculty members, we used to keep learning about different things.

Ques. What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the University and the students are?

Ans. My one and only role and responsibility is to implement the norms and policies carefully. If there are any issues, then inform the higher authority.

Ans. We want to achieve NAAC accreditation and NIRF accreditation. Provide the best education. Get higher ratings.

Ans. The greatest strength of our college is the teamwork between our faculty members and students and our placements. We aim at providing 100% placement assistance to our students. 

Ques. Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

Ans. Discipline is very important. Keep patience. Don’t follow the trends, work carefully and according to your needs.
