NMIMS Indore Students Craft Digital Solution for City Parking Woes

Indore, December 2023: Addressing the growing problem of unorganised parking in major urban centres of the country in their prompt statement at the Grand Finale round of ‘Smart India Hackathon 2023’, a team of six exceptional students developed a working prototype of an innovative application called, ‘iPark’. The application leverages technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computer Vision (CV), and is designed to help traffic regulators live-track and detect unorganised and illegal parking. The team presented a fully functional working prototype of their product in front of the judges at the finale.

Sam Varghese, Nishtha Pandya, Suhani Khandelwal, Priyansh Chhablani, Arohi Jain and Shalom Ram were part of the team from SVKM’s NMIMS School of Technology, Management and Engineering (STME) Indore that participated in the All-India Council for Technical Education’s (AICTE) ‘Smart India Hackathon 2023’, a national-level competition for young innovators. The team was selected among the top 5 teams for the ‘Grand Finale’ round of the competition. Participants included top teams from India. The team were adjudged the winner of the competition. 

For the Grand Finale round, participating schools were required to organise internal hackathons at their respective campuses and select the top 30 teams. The AICTE then selected the top 5 teams from all the participating teams for the finale. This year, the esteemed judges included Product Managers from top companies such as Wipro as well as owners of US-based start-ups. Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi attended the event virtually and interacted with the participants, encouraging them to think innovatively to usher in new chapters of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’.

The winning team from STME selected the problem statement by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, which required them to solve the problem of parking spaces across cities in India. They were required to develop and present their innovation within 2-3 weeks. In the endeavour, they received help at every step of the way from the esteemed faculty at NMIMS Indore and were mentored by Prof. Abhay Deep Seth, STME, NMIMS, Indore

The students behind the innovation received a cash prize of INR 1,00,000 as well as appreciation from the judges. The participants will use the cash prize to further improve and develop the mobile application. Moreover, in the next few months, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs will start testing ‘iPark’ across the country. 

Speaking about the learnings from the competition, Sam Varghese, a student from the winning team said, “Participating in events like the Smart India Hackathon 2023 provides you with global exposure. They provide you with a unique platform for knowledge exchange and interaction with students from top educational institutions such as IITs.”

Appreciating the achievement of the NMIMS Indore team, Dr. Anshuman Jaswal, Director, NMIMS Indore, said, “We welcome the victory of our students at the Smart India Hackathon 2023. iPark is a first-of-its-kind application that uses AI technology to manage parking and traffic adherence and can transform urban infrastructure by decongesting road traffic. Research Scholars and Top Academics Come Together at NMIMS Indore

Indore, December 2023: Recently, SVKM’s NMIMS Indore’s School of Technology Management and Engineering (STME) hosted an educational and informative National Level Workshop on "Grant Writing, IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) and Publication Strategy". The week-long workshop was designed for faculty members, research scholars and professionals from research organizations and industry. The event garnered an overwhelming response with over 220 registrations received from top faculty members and zealous research scholars from across prominent national educational institutions from 18 cities.

The workshop was graced by guest speakers from renowned National Universities and National Research Centres, who included, Adv. Praneetha K Rasbag, Founder-Prasa IP; Dr. Rajeev Sharma, Scientist, F Frontier and Futuristic Technologies (FFT) Division, Department of Science & Technology; Dr. Uma Shankar Sharma, Head Department of Physics Registrar, Rustamji Institute of Technology BSF Tekanpur, Gwalior; Ms. Sanjivini Kaul Raina, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi and Dr. Sandeep Atre Founder & Managing Director, Socialigence.

The workshop was specifically designed to delve into four critical areas of academia - exploring research grant opportunities, honing the craft of effective grant proposal writing, understanding the nuances of managing Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) concerning research outputs, and adopting strategic publication methods aimed at augmenting research visibility.

At the engrossing event, the distinguished attendees shared their vast experiences on several critical aspects related to techniques and strategies for writing successful grant proposals, an overview of intellectual property rights including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets and ethical considerations and guidelines for publishing research work.

The diverse backgrounds of the speakers brought a comprehensive perspective on various aspects and methodologies of research and its overall impact. Legal experts in attendance specifically discussed ethical conduct in research involving individuals, compliance with laws, understanding intellectual property rights, fair publication practices and specific regulations in different fields.

Highlighting the purpose and importance of the event, Dr. Anshuman Jaswal, said, “The one-week National Level Workshop was organised as an endeavour to bring together excellent research scholars and eminent academia from prestigious education institutions across the country. The workshop was aimed at informing and educating aspiring students about the vast yet challenging realm of research. Participants benefitted from this workshop by encompassing grant writing, legal, and ethical aspects of research. They acquired valuable insights into securing funding, navigating legal complexities, ensuring ethical research conduct, and improving publication practices. We look forward to hosting more such stimulating events and workshops.”

NMIMS Indore Student Body’s Pen to Prosperity Challenge: An Opportunity for Aspiring Writers to Shine

Indore, October 2023: The Student council at NMIMS Indore Campus is organising ‘Pen to Prosperity: The Narendra Modi Manuscript Challenge’ - a unique initiative towards providing undergraduate, postgraduate and school students (standard XI and above) from across the country a platform to showcase their literary genius and admiration for the Honourable Prime Minister’s visionary leadership. Selected manuscripts will become a part of the book to be authored by Dr. Vinay Kandpal, which aims to chronicle the inspiring life and transformative governance policies of the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. 

Dr. Vinay Kandpal has over 19 years of rich experience in academia and industry. He has published 52 research papers in leading journals and presented his work at globally renowned universities. He has also written five prolific books on varied topics of management. 

The book aims to capture a wide range of audience including supporters, critics and researchers seeking a comprehensive understanding of Shri Narendra Modi's life, political career, and India's changed political landscape after his elevation as the Prime Minister of the country. The book will provide readers an opportunity to analyse his leadership style, accomplishments, and challenges. It aims to explore his vision for the nation through transformative policies and will present a balanced account of his leadership’s impact on the political, economic, and social realms. 

The ‘Pen to Prosperity: The Narendra Modi Manuscript Challenge’ is a nationwide challenge open to students from every part of the country. Participants are eligible to submit a maximum of two manuscripts of a maximum of 2,000 words each in English. The submissions will be reviewed by a specialised committee and the best entries will be selected to feature in the final manuscript. The winning participants will be awarded with a certificate and co-authoring opportunities. Entries for the Manuscript Challenge will be accepted through Google Forms (add Registration link/www.nmimsindore.org/0732-2581500. The last date for submission of the manuscripts is 31 October 2023. The results will be communicated within two weeks of the submission deadline.

NMIMS Indore's Convocation 2023: Paving Pathways for Future Leaders

Indore, 2023 – SVKM’s NMIMS Indore held its prestigious convocation ceremony, to celebrate the academic accomplishments of its distinguished graduates from the School of Technology Management & Engineering (STME) and School of Commerce (SOC).

The convocation was graced by Chief Guest Shri Snehal Desai, the Former CFO of Adani Group Ltd. The Guest of Honor, Shri Sheshadri Sevalgi, CFO of General Mills, added a touch of grandeur to the occasion. The event took place at the Seminar Hall, Second Floor of NMIMS Indore. In his inspiring welcome address, Dr. Sharad Mhaiskar, Pro Vice Chancellor, SVKM’s NMIMS, said, “It is indeed a proud moment for NMIMS and the graduating students. Shri Snehal Desai, Former CFO, Adani Group Ltd. in his address, shared some pearls of wisdom with the graduating students. He said, “Growth in any corporate set-up will come only when they recognize your commitment to the organization. Commitment is the most important reason for success. You must strive to complete whatever job you are assigned gracefully. I will advise you to get out of the social media culture and your smartphones and instead read voraciously and have a hobby. Most importantly, you must ensure that you work with people who challenge you day in and day out.”

Shri Sheshadri Sevalgi, CFO of General Mills, said, “If you want to grow in life, have insights, don’t be dismissive of anyone imparting knowledge. I would like to share the three mantras that have worked for me – be bold in your aspirations; have self-belief and confidence and invest in yourself – have a sense of purpose and build your overall potential and capability.”

SVKM's NMIMS Indore Empowers Researchers with National FDP on Grant Writing, IPR, and Publication Strategies

Indore, August 2023 – SVKM's NMIMS School of Technology Management & Engineering (STME), Indore, in association with SVKM's Central Training, successfully organised a transformative 6-day Faculty Development (FDP) program titled "Enhancing Research Impact: National FDP on Grant Writing, IPR, and Publication Strategies". The event witnessed an overwhelming response with more than 400 registrations from faculty members and research scholars from educational institutions across India, including 90 registrations from within NMIMS.

The event saw the convergence of distinguished speakers and experts from renowned National Universities and National Research Centers, who shared their rich experiences and keen perceptions on various aspects of research. Some eminent names that joined the program were Prof. Anurag Srivastava, Professor and Dean of Alumni and External Relations, Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management (ABV-IIITM) Gwalior; Dr. Ravindra Mukhiya, Principal Scientist, Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CEERI), Pilani; Dr. Rishi Sharma, Principal Scientist, Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CEERI), Pilani; Dr. Pankaj Mishra, Professor and University Ph.D. Coordinator, Amity University, Gwalior; Prof. Pankaj Srivastava, Professor and Head, Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management (ABV-IIITM), Gwalior; and Mrs. Vibha Tiwari, Life Coach and Yoga Consultant, Indore. They delved into research funding, intellectual property, and effective research publication topics such as Funding Source Exploration and Opportunities, Open Access and Copyright Considerations, Emerging Trends, and Optimal Practice, providing insights into emerging trends within the research landscape, coupled with best practices that contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of research endeavours. Topics like Research Papers and Book Publication Strategies Pragmatic Approaches to Stress Management, and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) navigation were also discussed. The program's mission-oriented approach encouraged the participants to proactively address research-related challenges and contribute meaningfully to the academic and professional arenas.

The FDP was organised in hybrid mode, offering both in-person and virtual participation options, ensuring flexibility and accessibility for attendees. The event was well-received by researchers, academicians, and professionals from research organisations and industries who were present.

This momentous event orgaized by Global Order & EDF ( Environmental Defence Foundation - India Chapter) celebrated Indore's journey towards cleanliness and sustainability, highlighting its status as India's cleanest city for six consecutive years. The distinguished Chief Guest, Shri Pushyamitra Bhargav, the Hon'ble Mayor of Indore along with Smt. Harshika Singh, Commissioner of Indore Municipal Corporation graced the occasion and offered valuable insights and perspective.

The conference marked a significant milestone in Indore's journey towards environmental consciousness. The event showcased NMIMS Indore's commitment to fostering holistic growth among students and faculty by encouraging academic discourse on significant issues. It served as a dynamic platform for discussions and insights while promoting intellectual development among participants.

During the discussion, Shri. Pushyamitra Bhargav, Mayor of Indore said, "It has taken years of consistency and efforts for Indore to be where we are today. From 2015 to 2023 Indore has seen a complete transformation. Putting a thought into practice requires behavioral change which is why Indore is successful today and is taken as an example not only in India but abroad." NMIMS Indore's commitment to sustainability was evident through the discussions on its various pioneering initiatives, some of which were highlighted during the course of the event. For instance, the Swaha Machine at the campus, operational for the past 5 years, easily helps convert food waste into fertiliser, demonstrating a closed-loop waste management approach. Another notable initiative at NMIMS Indore has been the introduction of the Battery Operated Vehicle - AQUILLA, which provides eco-friendly transportation on campus, reducing carbon emissions. The Sewage Treatment Plant which will soon be operational, will treat waste water which, in turn, will be used for gardening and utilised in the toilet flush. One hundred and fifty kilo litres of water will be biologically treated in this innovative plant.

Justice for All: NMIMS Indore's Legal Aid Camp Makes a Mark in Hatod

August 2023: SAMATVA-The Legal Aid & CSR Society of NMIMS Indore, in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Indore, successfully organized a Legal Aid Camp at Hatod, Indore. 

The camp witnessed an overwhelming response from the residents of Hatod and the key dignitaries, making it a resounding success. The event was graced by the presence of Adv. Ishwarchandra Solanki and Adv. Sajjan Singh Solanki, Panel advocates DLSA, Indore, Mr. Satyanarayan Mandloi, Principal, Government Inter College, Hatod, Mr. Akshay Jain, Journalist, along with Dr. Ashutosh Hajela, Associate Dean, School of Law, NMIMS-Indore, the faculty coordinators of SAMATVA, Mr. Aman Deep Singh, Assistant Professor, School of Law, NMIMS-Indore and Ms. Sunistha Moghe, Assistant Professor, School of Law, NMIMS-Indore.

The camp comprised several sessions which included a free legal aid booth, sensitization by experts on several issues like ‘Protection against domestic violence’, ‘Prevention of child labour and child sexual abuse’, and ‘Information on several government schemes’, to name a few. As part of the legal aid camp, documentaries on fundamental rights, sexual harassment at the workplace, and girl child education were also shown to the residents.

Students also performed a ‘street play on the theme of female feticide and the ever-prevalent dowry system in our society. Students of NMIMS spread awareness about these issues through a door-to-door sensitization and survey drive covering 10 wards of the Hatod tehsil. Around 50 residents of nearby villages approached the free legal aid booth for the resolution of their issues which were primarily related to domestic violence, maintenance, old age and widow pension, and availing various government schemes. The legal aid booth consisted of Prof. Sunishtha Moghe from NMIMS Indore and panel advocates from DLSA, Indore. 

Dr. Ashutosh Hajela discussed the importance of legal literacy in society and Prof. Aman Deep Singh talked about the scope of legal education and guided students on how to pursue it. Many students of Hatod came forward to speak to our faculty members on the ways and avenues to pursue legal education.

The success of the Legal Aid Camp would not have been possible without the unwavering support from the residents and officials of Nagar Parishad, Hatod, along with the District Legal Services Authority, Indore. The Legal Aid Society of NMIMS, SAMATVA, remains committed to fostering legal awareness, empowering communities, and ensuring access to justice for all.

Talking about the noble initiative, Dr. Ashutosh Hajela, said, “We strongly believe that having knowledge about the law is crucial for creating a society where people feel empowered. Our Legal Aid Camp initiative aims to raise awareness about the rights and protections that every person has. It is important for communities to be well-informed about their options so they can confidently exercise their rights and pursue justice when necessary. We are dedicated to promoting awareness. Will persist in our endeavor to empower communities and guarantee equal access to justice for everyone.”


NMIMS Indore STME Students Excel in Kavach 2023 Cyber Security Hackathon

Mumbai, August 2023 - The talented students from NMIMS Indore STME have achieved a significant milestone by securing a place among the top 5 teams in the prestigious Kavach 2023 Cyber Security Hackathon, organized by the Government of India. The event, focused on advanced CCTV analytics, witnessed intense competition from over 20,000 to 30,000 teams across the country.

The hackathon, launched by the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell, AICTE, in collaboration with the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D)(MHA) and the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), aimed to design and develop innovative solutions using live CCTV feeds to automatically detect incidents related to street crime, violence, burglary, theft, infiltration, and unauthorized access. The NMIMS Indore STME team, led by Sam Varghese, successfully created an exceptional machine learning model that analyzed CCTV footage in real-time, identifying accidents, and illegal activities, and providing instant alerts to the nearest authorities.

Expressing his delight, Sam Varghese, the team lead, stated, "I still can't believe it! Out of all the thousands of teams in the advanced CCTV analysis domain of the country, we were chosen as one of the top 5. It's truly unbelievable! We couldn't be happier knowing that our hard work and dedication have been acknowledged by the Government of India on a national level. It's an absolute honor."

Avni Bhardwaj, a team member, shared her thoughts on the achievement, saying, "We knew our idea was great, but we always had this uncertainty of selection as there is cutthroat competition. Upon hearing the news, it took a little time to process the shock, but deep inside, it was expected."

NMIMS Indore STME takes immense pride in nurturing such innovative and talented students. Dr. Aaquil Bunglowala, the head of STME, provided valuable guidance and support to the team, ensuring their success.

The students faced numerous challenges during their journey, including balancing the project alongside their academic commitments and forming an efficient team. However, their determination, perseverance, and utilization of advanced technologies, such as TensorFlow and YOLOv7, enabled them to overcome these obstacles.

The impact of their invention on society is substantial. By employing their advanced machine learning model, incidents can be detected, analyzed, and reported promptly, facilitating timely intervention by the authorities. This technology holds great potential in enhancing public safety and reducing response time, potentially saving lives.

Shining Star: Jaanvi Porwal of NMIMS Indore Scores Landmark Placement as Marketing Associate at Hevo Data

Jaanvi Porwal, a B Tech. student in Computer Science and Business Systems (CSBS), has secured the highest placement at Hevo Data, a leading data integration platform. This achievement highlights the excellence and calibre of NMIMS STME students in the industry. 

Jaanvi Porwal, hailing from Bhilwara, Rajasthan, showcased her exceptional skills and talent during the rigorous recruitment process.
