Dr. Hem Chandra Pandey is an Assistant Professor (Physics) with extensive academic and research experience. He is currently serving as the Head of the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering at Birla Institute of Applied Science in Bhimtal, Uttarakhand, India. Dr. Pandey holds a Ph.D. in Physics, which he obtained through an Indo-German Academic Exchange Service program between Kumaun University in India and the University of Konstanz in Germany.

His research focuses on various aspects of quantum chromodynamics, including the study of monopoles, dyons, and the dual version of color gauge theory. His Ph.D. thesis, titled "Study of Role of Monopoles and Dyons in Dual Version of Color Gauge Theory," was supervised by Dr. H.C. Chandola from Kumaun University and co-supervised by Prof. Dr. H. Dehnen from Konstanz University.

Dr. Pandey has received several academic awards and fellowships throughout his career. These include the Senior Research Fellowship by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the DAAD Research Fellowship by the German Academic Exchange Service. He has also been actively involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate classes for over sixteen years.

In terms of administrative responsibilities, Dr. Pandey has held various positions within the Birla Institute of Applied Sciences, such as Deputy Registrar, Chief Hostel Warden, and Head Examiner for Physics. He has also been a member of the Board of Studies for Physics at Uttarakhand Technical University.

Guest lectures and workshops with industry experts enrich the learning experience and expose students to real-world challenges, success stories, and best practices. Teachers should regularly update course content and materials to reflect the latest developments and technology in the industry. This may involve modifying existing courses or introducing new courses to address new areas.


You have held key positions at education institutes throughout your professional career. What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

I enjoy learning, and that is the main reason that keeps me connected. This career has three aspects, teaching, research, and academic administration. Also, when teaching young minds, you are innovative and always looking for creative ways to teach.


Being the Registrar/HOD, what is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

Leadership always leads from the front. As a leader, my job is to help my team achieve excellence through hard work, integrity, and ownership. A leader leads and obeys others by influencing, inspiring, supporting, and motivating others.

What Do you think your roles and responsibilities to the college and the students are?

My roles and responsibilities to the University and students include providing strategic leadership and direction to the University. Setting a clear vision and ensuring its effective implementation is important to me. I need to ensure the highest standards of academic excellence by promoting a culture of research, innovation, and quality education. Additionally, I need to ensure the overall well-being and success of students by providing a holistic learning environment.


What do you think should be the college top priority over the next 10 years?

The main priority of the university is excellence in education and research. Our main strategy is to attract and retain the best professors for decades. Experienced teachers can make miraculous changes in our educational ecosystem. The company plans to earn significant revenue from research and consulting. This will change our entire approach to project-based learning and inquiry.


What do you see as college greatest strengths?

Ours is an innovative college system that focuses on value-based education and subverts the traditional education system. We follow modern learning approaches like design thinking, innovation-focused lab works, advanced credit systems, and intensive partnerships with industry. It provides ample scope for development to students, faculty, and staff. It provides all the modern facilities required for the best possible teaching and research. It respects the talents of students and teachers; and motivates them to innovate.
