BHU to Accept UGC/CSIR NET Scores for PhD Admission from 2024-25

New Delhi: The Banaras Hindu University(BHU) has notified that it will consider UGC NET and CSIR NET 2024 scores for admission of candidates into PhD programs for the 2024-25 academic session. It further provided that it will not conduct any separate Research Entrance Test for admission from this year onwards. The university has two mode of PhD admissions.

BHU in its notification, states that “Based on the public notification dated 27th March 2024 of the University Grants Commission, the Banaras Hindu University has decided that Score of UGC/CSIR NET Examination, June 2024 shall be used for admission to Ph.D. program for the academic session 2024-25 and no separate Research Entrance Test will be conducted by the University”.

Thus, BHU advises candidates to apply for the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) in June 2024 or the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR NET) NET examination scheduled in June 2024. In an earlier notification, UGC has directed the universities to make PhD admissions based on NET scores from 2024-25.

Mode of PhD Admission in BHU

Admission for PhD courses in BHU is made in two modes:

  • Research Entrance Test (RET) mode 
  • Research Entrance Test Exempted (RET-Exempted) mode 

If further provided, candidates with qualified JRF can be admitted under the RET-exempted mode. Those candidates who will qualify for the Category II and III of the UGC/CSIR NET exam in June 2024 can take admitted under the RET mode. 

Students taking admission through the RET mode and in the Institute of Agricultural Sciences must have appeared for the Agricultural Services Recruitment Board(ASRB) examination 2024. Their scorecards from the ASRB examination will be considered for admission.
