Assam Govt Merges SEBA and AHSEC into ASSEB Through New Bill

New Delhi: The Assam Assembly has recently decided to pass the Assam State School Education Board Bill in their 2024 Budget Session. The Bill was passed on February 26, 2024

It will club the Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) with the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) to make the new Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB).

The ASSEB will be formed after the end of the Assam Assembly Budget sessions. Previously, the SEBA would conduct 10th Board Exams while the AHSEC was responsible for conducting 12th Boards. The Assam school board merger means that the ASSEB will conduct both the 10th and 12th Boards under its aegis.

As per the ASSEB Bill (2024), the ASSEB can do the following:

  • Prescribe curriculum and syllabi for classes 4th to 12th all across Assam
  • Conduct examinations for classes 4th to 12th
  • Collect examination fees
  • Publish exam results
  • Grant certificates, scholarships, and prizes to students
  • Prescribe and select textbooks and supplementary materials
  • Recognize schools having classes from 4th to 12th
  • Provide teacher training sessions
  • Advice the government on matters of student welfare
  • Organize seminars
  • Form Committees under the ASSEB act, and much more.

According to Assam Education Minister Ronuj Pegu, “The objective is to introduce the Assam State School Education Board Bill, 2024 to develop, regulate, and supervise the standards and quality in school education in the state of Assam."
