UCD offers a skills conversion graduate programme for individuals who hold a primary degree in another discipline (e.g., Arts, Commerce, Engineering), and would like to enter an IT-related career. This programme provides a thorough foundation in modern Computer Science in a practically oriented learning environment.

On completion of the programme you will be able to demonstrate an integrated knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles of Computer Science; demonstrate competence and specialist knowledge in areas such as Programming, Data Science, Software Engineering, Web Application Development, Database Design, Cloud & Distributed Computing, Artificial Intelligence & Cognitive Science; undertake independent innovative research and development projects; and work with confidence both autonomously and as part of a team on projects related to real-world computer science applications.

This MSc programme will provide you with the skills required to understand the entrepreneurship and innovation required for the software industry. Many national and multinational companies employ computer science graduates in areas such as software development and engineering, artificial intelligence, systems and networks, database and systems security as well as mobile multimedia, modelling, research and development. In the final part of the degree, you will also get the chance to demonstrate the skills you have learned by completing a substantial research and development project.

The strong practical focus of the programme culminates in a project practicum, carried out over the summer months. Typically, students will develop a prototype software system in their Major area that targets a real-world problem. They may also analyse processes or techniques, and propose and evaluate alternatives. Most projects are individual but, exceptionally, may be carried out as part of a team.

Students may also be sponsored by external clients or develop their own ideas. Typically, projects commence with a feasibility study, followed by the creation of a project plan and development of a software application or rigorous theoretical analysis.
