Master of Science [M.S] (Molecular Biotechnology)
Field of Study:
$8,720 /Yr
Classical biotechnology has mainly focused on the production process and related questions concerning technical processes (such as fermentation, separation, etc.). In the age of genetic engineering and synthetic biology, however, it has become much simpler to optimize the biosynthetic performance of the cell itself. Further, it has also become possible to design and efficiently synthesize artificial biomolecules with enhanced or even new functions (protein design). As a graduate of the Master's program in Molecular Biotechnology, you will be able to analyze complex scientific questions in the field of biotechnology, molecular biology, and related disciplines, structure procedures and evaluate research results.
Important Dates
There are no tuition fees per law in Germany. In order to study at TUM you do, however, have to pay the student union fee and a solidarity contribution for the Semester Ticket.

Career and Placement after Course
After the Master's program, you can stay at university and do a doctorate or enter the biotechnology industry. In the medical field, you will find jobs in the development of pharmaceuticals and therapeutics, help in the further development of diagnostics, and conduct research work on interfaces, for example in prostheses or tissue replacement. If you are more interested in industrial biotechnology, you can find work in developing new processes and materials from renewable resources. Alternatively, you could go into the agricultural sector and work with genetically modified plants and animals as well as modified microorganisms.

why to opt? | In the Master's program in Molecular Biotechnology, you will deal with the production and construction of natural and artificial biomolecules. While classical biotechnology is mainly concerned with the production route and the associated engineering process – such as fermentation or separation processes – molecular biotechnology focuses on the biosynthetic performance of the cell itself. It also concerns the construction and efficient synthesis of artificial biomolecules with improved or completely new functions through protein design. This links to the new field of Synthetic Biology. By intervening in the structure and function of the biomolecule, you can change the genetic configuration of the producing cell or organism. This field of work therefore requires the interdisciplinary application of genetic engineering, protein chemistry and biophysical and bioinformatics methods. | Biotechnology is a very broad field and graduates from the M.Sc. programme in Biotechnology at Saarland University have access to a wide range of career options. Biotechnologists develop new drugs and diagnostic test procedures, they cultivate plants with specific resistance or tolerance properties and they design biofuels and biopolymers. Students learn how to examine and analyse complex systems experimentally and how to describe these systems using mathematical and bioinformatics models. The focus of the programme is on systems biotechnology and on the associated fields of bioinformatics, natural products and active pharmaceutical ingredients, molecular biotechnology and bioprocess engineering. |

- I chose TUM since it is one of the top 3 universities in Germany. I love the German language and culture. Also, it is a public university, which meant the tuition fee was quite low. I chose this particular program because it offers a vast number of courses to choose from.,
- I like the vast amount of opportunities the university presents students with. One can really grow as an individual in such an environment. It is student-friendly. The culture is open such that international students can feel at home.
- Dislikes:
- I did not like that one is left on their own when it comes to curriculum planning. It can get really overwhelming for international students and a bit more hand-holding in the first semester would go a long way. Also, the professors consider that you know everything about the academic system (exams, etc) there already, and do not give personal attention to international students.
Course Curriculum:
I found the course syllabus to be extremely vast and one can be spoilt for choices. Students have complete freedom to design their curriculum and even their exam schedule. The curriculum subjects were excellent for those who want to pursue industrial research in biotechnology. I found that there were fewer basic research subjects and more applied subjects. It was updated too, in that the professors would teach from their own areas of research, hence always providing up-to-date knowledge and research application of the topics. I was unfortunately unable to gain any industrial exposure or research experience since I was there during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fees:
In the year 2020-21, my semester tuition fee was nil, and there was a semester contribution of around 145 euros. This included the Student Union costs and a semester ticket for free travel in public transport (buses, trams and trains) on weekends in the Munich travel network. However, non-EU (international) students enrolled in winter 2024-25 sessions and onwards will have a tuition fee of 2000 to 3000 euros per semester.

The Technical University Munich (TUM) accepts both the Goethe Zertifikat B1 and the DSH exam as proof of German language proficiency for their programs.
Hello. Is GMAT required to apply for Finance and Information Management? (My previous field of study was finance)
For applicants from India, China, Pakistan, Egypt, and Bangladesh, the GMAT is required with a minimum score of 640 or a percentile ranking of at least 64.8% on the GMAT Focus edition. However, you can explore the TUM courses to learn more about the curriculum, fees, and other details.
Yes, you need to submit the GRE score. You must have a bachelor’s degree (requiring at least 6 semesters of study) or equivalent in computer science, engineering, mathematics, or a closely related field might be preferred, or a comparable program at a German or foreign university. English Language Proficiency Score IELTS - 6.5 | TOEFL: 88 | PTE: 65 along with other admissions requirements. For more information related to the program, You can check here.
