IMU CET 2027 Qualifying Marks
You need to score the following minimum marks to qualify for IMU CET 2027 counselling. These qualifying cutoff marks are expected to remain the same as 2026:
| Category | Minimum Qualifying Marks (out of 200) | Qualifying Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| General / OBC-NCL / EWS | 80 | 40% |
| SC / ST / PwD | 60 | 30% |
Qualifying IMU CET 2027 does not guarantee a seat. Your rank among all qualified candidates decides which campus and program you can get during counselling. Only qualified candidates are eligible for counselling registration.
IMU CET 2027 Cutoff
IMU CET 2027 cutoff ranks will be published after each round of counselling. IMU does not release a single overall cutoff — instead, it releases program-wise and campus-wise opening and closing ranks after every round. The 2027 cutoff will depend on the number of qualified candidates, exam difficulty, and available seats.
IMU CET Previous Year Cutoff Ranks (Reference for 2027 Planning)
Since the 2027 counselling has not happened yet, the table below uses previous year data to help you plan. These are approximate values based on Round 1 seat allotment from third-party sources:
| Program | Category | 2026 Round 1 Closing Rank (Approx.) | 2025 Closing Rank (Approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| B.Tech Marine Engineering | General | ~475 | ~577 |
| B.Tech Marine Engineering | OBC-NCL | ~800 | ~900 |
| B.Tech Marine Engineering | SC | ~150 | ~175 |

| B.Sc Nautical Science | General | ~400 | ~450 |
| MBA Port and Shipping Management | General | ~200 | ~250 |
These cutoff ranks are indicative and based on third-party data from previous cycles. Official IMU CET 2027 cutoffs will be released after each counselling round at imu.edu.in. Cutoffs vary by campus and by round — Round 2 and Round 3 closing ranks are typically higher (numerically) than Round 1 as more seats get filled progressively.
Factors That Affect IMU CET 2027 Cutoff
- Total qualified candidates: More candidates qualifying means more competition. In 2026, around 72,000 candidates appeared, up from 60,000 in 2025.
- Exam difficulty: An easier paper leads to higher scores across the board, which compresses the competitive range for top ranks.
- Seats available: Fewer seats in a program or at a specific campus make the cutoff tighter. The total seat matrix is above 1,500.
- Reservation category: SC/ST/OBC-NCL candidates have separate cutoffs and compete within their own pool.
- Round number: Cutoffs for Round 2 and Round 3 are usually numerically higher (easier to get) compared to Round 1.
IMU CET 2027 Marks vs Rank Analysis
Your IMU CET rank depends on your score relative to all other qualified candidates. In 2026, around 72,000 candidates appeared — significantly more than the 60,000 in 2025. As participation grows each year, the same score may fetch a slightly lower rank in 2027. The table below uses previous year trends to give you an expected score-to-rank range for planning your preparation target.
Expected IMU CET 2027 Score vs Rank (General Category)
| Expected Score Range (out of 200) | Expected Overall Rank |
|---|---|
| 165 – 200 | 1 – 50 |
| 150 – 164 | 51 – 200 |
| 135 – 149 | 201 – 600 |
| 120 – 134 | 601 – 1,500 |
| 105 – 119 | 1,501 – 3,500 |
| 90 – 104 | 3,501 – 6,000 |
| 80 – 89 | 6,001 – 10,000 |
| Below 80 | Not Qualified (General/OBC-NCL/EWS) |
These rank ranges are estimated based on 2025 and 2026 trends. Actual IMU CET 2027 ranks will depend on exam difficulty and the total number of candidates who appear and qualify.
IMU CET Year-Wise Participation Trend
| Year | Approximate Candidates Appeared | Year-on-Year Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | ~50,000 | Steady growth |
| 2025 | ~60,000 | Moderate increase (+20%) |
| 2026 | ~72,000 | Strong increase (+20%) |
| 2027 | Expected to grow further | Rising interest in maritime careers |
The rising participation reflects growing interest in maritime careers, driven by global shipping demand and India’s National Maritime Development Programme. This also means competition for top IMU campuses will continue to intensify, and a higher score will be needed to secure a top-100 rank in 2027 compared to 2025 or 2024.

IMU CET 2027 Preparation Tips
With the IMU CET 2027 exam expected in May 2027, you have several months starting now to build a strong preparation plan. Physics and Mathematics together carry 100 out of 200 marks, so these two subjects need the maximum time. A structured, consistent plan starting from October–November 2026 can make a significant difference in your final rank.
Subject-Wise Strategy for IMU CET 2027
- Physics (50 marks): Focus on Mechanics, Electrostatics, and Modern Physics — these chapters have the highest question frequency based on previous year papers. Start with NCERT Class 11 and 12, then use HC Verma for deeper concept building and problem-solving practice.
- Mathematics (50 marks): Calculus, Trigonometry, and Coordinate Geometry are the most important topics. Speed and accuracy in Maths can push your rank by hundreds of places. Solve at least 50 problems per chapter before moving on.
- Chemistry (25 marks): NCERT is the most important source for Chemistry in IMU CET. Organic Chemistry and Chemical Bonding need regular revision. For Physical Chemistry, focus on numericals — they are predictable and consistently high-scoring.
- English (25 marks): Read English newspapers daily to build comprehension and vocabulary. Practice grammar rules and error-correction patterns. Many students neglect this section, but 25 marks in English can be the difference between two close ranks at the top.
- General Knowledge and Aptitude (50 marks): Read a current affairs digest weekly and maintain a short-note notebook. For aptitude, practice number series, data interpretation, and logical reasoning regularly. This section rewards consistent preparation over last-minute cramming.
Month-Wise Preparation Roadmap for IMU CET 2027
- October–December 2026: Build your conceptual base. Finish NCERT Class 11 Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Start a daily current affairs reading habit.
- January–February 2027: Move to Class 12 NCERT and start solving chapter-wise MCQs. Complete high-weightage chapters in Physics and Mathematics first.
- March–April 2027: Begin full-length mock tests — at least 2 per week. Analyze your performance after each test and fix weak areas. Keep revising Chemistry and GK regularly.
- May 2027 (final month): Only revision and mock tests. Do not start new topics. Revise short notes for GK and Chemistry every day. Take 3 to 4 full tests in exam-like computer-based conditions before the exam date.

Additional Preparation Tips
- Solve the last 5 years of IMU CET question papers to understand recurring topics and the difficulty level of each section.
- Practice mock tests in computer-based mode — the CBT interface is different from pen-and-paper and needs separate practice to build speed.
- If you are also preparing for JEE Main, the PCM syllabus overlap is strong. IMU CET is generally considered slightly easier than JEE Main in terms of difficulty, so JEE preparation gives you a solid base.
- Start DGS medical fitness preparation early — many seafaring programs require strict physical standards, and candidates with poor eyesight or color blindness are often disqualified.

Scores of 150 or more usually place you within the top 200 ranks (General), which gives you access to any IMU campus and program. For the most competitive choice — B.Tech Marine Engineering at IMU Chennai — you need to be within the top 500 General ranks based on previous year cutoffs.
Ques. What courses can I get through IMU CET 2027?

Ans. IMU CET is a moderately competitive exam. The syllabus is based on Class 11 and 12 PCM — the same base you need for JEE Main or BITSAT. If you are preparing for multiple engineering entrance exams, you will find IMU CET manageable with some additional preparation in GK and English. With more than 72,000 candidates appearing in 2026, you need a focused and consistent plan from at least 6 months before the exam to secure a top rank.
