GME or Graduate Marine Engineering is a 1-year diploma training course, undertaken by candidates who wish to work in the merchant navy sector. The colleges that offer this program are monitored by the Directorate General of Shipping who decide on the admission criteria and eligibility criteria.

Graduates from GME are eligible to work as junior engineers and complete at least 6 months of training service in merchant navy vessels. Upon completion of the training period, one has to sit for the Class IV Part ‘B’ examination. Marine Structure

Marine structures teach candidates the principles and applications of building sound ships. A basic and an in-depth study of the design and analysis of structures is done here.

The course deals with the load-carrying functionality, load-effect analysis and design of ships and marine structures. The following topics are addressed: Linear elastic analysis of shell- and plate-structures including numerical methods. Energy principles and virtual work.

Ship Maneuvering and Control

The various topics covered are: Transport theorem and conservation principles, Navier-Stokes' equation, dimensional analysis, ideal and potential flows, vorticity and Kelvin's theorem, hydrodynamic forces in potential flow, D'Alembert's paradox, added-mass, slender-body theory, viscous-fluid flow, laminar and turbulent boundary layers, model testing, scaling laws, application of potential theory to surface waves, energy transport, wave/body forces, linearized theory of lifting surfaces, and experimental project in the towing tank or propeller tunnel.

Manufacturing and Materials

This specialization deals with gaining an understanding of the relationship between different materials and the manufacturing process. Various methods of manufacturing are discussed like casting, welding etc.

It covers the important aspects of metallurgy and materials engineering which must be taken into account when designing for marine environments. The purpose is to aid materials selection and the incorporation of materials data into the design, manufacture and inspection strategy.

GME Admission Process

Entrance Exam Based Admission

Visit the official university admission portal and register for the entrance exam.
Fill the Application Form by providing required details afterwards.
Pay the application fee online.
Submit and keep a print out of the application form and fee receipt.

Merit-Based Admission

Students are selected based on the merit score .
Colleges will release a GME minimum cut off list every year.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility criteria for GME courses differs from institute to institute. Most institutes require their candidates to fulfil the following basic eligibility criteria in order to be admitted.

Educational qualifications: The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree (BE or B.Tech) in either Mechanical Engineering or in Naval Architecture specialization with minimum 60% aggregate score at the undergraduate level.
English proficiency: The candidate must be fluent in English. English must have been a compulsory subject at the 10+2 level examinations with at least 50% scored.
Age: The candidates must not be higher than 28 years of age at the time of training start date.
Medical fitness: Candidates must have 6/6 or perfect vision and must have perfect hearing without any hearing aids. The candidate must not have colour blindness. A medical exam will be conducted to test if the candidate is medically fit.

Graduate Marine Engineering Course for the batch of 2024 has commenced. The admission process is different for different colleges. There are nationwide exams, statewide exams, institute specific exams, and then there is a direct seat reservation system.

Admission to GME courses is mainly through entrance examinations, but colleges like Praveenya Institute of Marine Engineering & Maritime Studies admit students on a merit basis.

A majority of the colleges offering GME courses admit students on the basis of an entrance examination. The most common exams that most candidates apply to are as follows.

IMU CET

The Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test or the IMU CET is the most common entrance examination required for admission into marine engineering programmes conducted by the Indian Maritime University.

The exam is required for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The exam is held once a year, in online format in both English and Hindi language. Test centres are in over 36 cities in the country.

AP EAMCET

The AP EAMCET or Andhra Pradesh Engineering, Agriculture & Medical Common Entrance Test is the entrance examination for admission into top engineering colleges in Andhra Pradesh.

The exam is conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Kakinada on behalf of APSCHE. It is a computer-based exam that is held once a year. The paper format is objective type with 160 questions in total.

My experience during GME course in HIMT

Faculty:

The faculty here are mostly chief engineers and master mariners who are well qualified for teaching also . The faculty to student ratio in classes are 1:40 and in labs 1:8 which provides good interactions with students. The faculties are good enough to clear any doubts immediately with basic knowledge where we can able to understand well and good .

Placement Experience:

Regarding placements companies like VR maritime ,Goodwood ,Eastway, BW , Dynocom , Marshall visit our campus once in a month and are selecting cadets with interviews. Truely by Gods grace I got placed as engine cadet in Synergy Maritime. If you stay with good marks and knowledge in academics you will have higher chances of getting placed .

My experience at HIMT pursuing GME

From first semester end only we are eligible for placements, various companies like Goodwood, Damico, Eastaway, Dynacom, Sanmar, Bergebulk, comes for placements at HIMT College. Myself I'm placed at Synergy Marine Group . Our first 6 months is training period and during that period we get a stipend of 50000 per month. After clearing the 4thengineer competency our salary increases to 1.5 lakhs to 2.5 lakhs per month and once you become chief engineer you can draw a salary of about 15 lacs per month. You also get an NRE status of you sail forore tan 6months in a financial year. Around 85% of students get placed before passing out and the remaining in another 6 months time.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions:

Course fee for GME course is 395000, it's inclusive of our Tution fees, hostel fee, mess fees, uniform fees, books and stationary and other documentation charges. Laundry fee monthly 150 RS we have to pay additional. The basic stcw courses required for applying CDC is also included in the above fees. I chose HIMT for GME only for this reason, because this type of quality educational facilities you cannot get anywhere else in India at this fees rate. I'm glad to chose HIMT and thanks to HIMT Management . I have completed 7 months of course and I got placed in Synergy.

Journey through 1 year of GME @ HIMT College

There are many interesting inter college events happening across the semesters , we also have inhouse sports competitions semester wise. Football matches, volleyball matches, chess matches, even the faculties join with us in the competitions to make it more colorful, we also get chances to attend national level seminars like GLOMARS, INMARCO, GMIS, and many other , these events gives us the industry exposure as all shipping companies officials visit these events. At HIMT we have VR labs, where we are trained on various modules created by our Inhouse Faculties, these VR modules are very engaging and interactive. Our classrooms are fully air conditioned and have smart board facilities in all classrooms .

HIMT college has the lowest fees for this course in India provding the best facilities. And to promote women seafarers there's a huge discount for female seafarers, currently the course fee is 3,95,000 plus an additional refundable caution deposit of Rs.20000/-has to be paid, which would be refunded towards the end of the course if we don't make any breakages. The above course fee is inclusive of your uniform, books, tution fees, stationary, hostel, mess, stcw courses. By completion of the course we get CDC and SID also. While speaking on placement we have lot many companies visiting HIMT like MOL, MOLTQ, Dynacom, Eastaway, BSM, Synergy, ASP ship Management, Marlow Navigation, Vships and many others

My passion makes me join, faculty are very high in studies and there are comes from shipping field and they have lot's of experience in working and student ratio was like 1:1. everyone is well qualified with their degrees. there is only 1 time at end of the year and exams little bit tough.

Placements are very rare to get but the college will guide you and they will assist you in how to get the job. for gme in the middle of the course, they will start campus placements. recently BTech dock and dial came and they are 8 Persons are selected. 45%people can be placed.

My journey of geinstitute

The great eastern institute is run by the Great Eastern shipping company itself so cadets get pre-sponsored before the course some other shipping companies like BSM, Goodwood, seaspan visit the campus During the course. the highest salary is of Chief engineer and captain i.e 15000-20000 USD.

The fee structure was 565000 and scholarship Was given to the cadets who were having some good past Achievements and Very good academics. Fees were 5lakh 65000 overall, And after the course, we are placed by great eastern shipping company itself.

My Feedback and experience at HIMT as a GME Cadet

As a first-generation mariner, I've always wanted to join the merchant navy. After joining himt for the gme course I came to know of the dicipline that is being practised here. The faculty and the infrastructure here are of the highest quality. The exams and internals and orals conducted during the course will definitely help you in preparation for the class 4 examination

Internships Opportunities:

There are companies which offer internship opportunities for the cadets with stipend. There are many projects being regarding the ways to reduce maritime pollution and many other topics being conducted that you can be a part of and showcase your talent

Journey Of HIMT College

I chose this course as it's my passion to be a mariner and after completion of Mechanical Engineer, we can opt only GME course to become a Marine engineer. The faculties are very nice and supportive. Be good with the faculties, they will help you a lot in understanding the concept. All the faculties are ship experienced, many are chief engineers, Captains and 2nd engineers. Term exams were taken, one at the mid of the year and then later at the end of the year as st sem and 2nd sem.

Life at HIMT college is awesome. The principal is very supportive and lets everyone participate in the different fests conducted. I personally won the 2nd prize for singing which was held at IMU Chennai. Classrooms are now provided with Airconditioners. Cricket, Football, Table tennis, Volleyball, Badminton, and Swimming sports are played.

HIMT helps me to build a better Career at Sea

100% placements are not available, but the cadets scoring above 80% above in academics always stand a chance of appearing for placement interviews when the shipping companies visit the campus. After completion of the course also we will be called up by the college for various placement opportunities.

The HIMT college has very well-trained and experienced faculties both from the shipping industry and non mariners. The exams conducted by the college were of a moderate difficulty level and the overall course curriculum provided me to gain the confidence to work onboard a ship.

Fees structure is very apt for the various breakups like Tuition fees, food, and accommodation, uniforms, recreational facilities, swimming pool, Ship in Campus, and Industrial visits. There are no scholarships. At HIMT we have fully airconditioned classrooms and Futuristic labs like Virtual Reality labs.

My feedback and experience at HIMT as a GME Cadet

The course curriculum is excellent and the faculties at HIMT are well experienced, knowledgeable and good Mentors for all Trainees. The infrastructure facilities are also excellent and trainees get the best hands-on experience on each job to be performed on board the ship.

The fee structure is one of the lowest in the industry and value for your money is guaranteed. There is a scholarship for 25000 which can be availed for a year. The campus provides placement opportunities as and when the companies visit the college.

Campus life is very good. But this course is only for gents. college provided very good workshop and classrooms and gym, and some sports equipment like balls bat's, carrom, table tennis, chess etc, they have welding workshop, fitting and machining as well as they have 2 auxiliary marine engines and other marine machinery, all workshops and faculty are very good.

Basically, IMS conducts 2 courses first GME, which is 1year pre-sea training course in marine engineering for degree students, and DME which is a 2year pre-sea training course, they provide the best practical knowledge as well as theory also, they organize training In Goa shipyard limited, mormugaon port trust, marine electrical agency, Adani port trust.

Good quality of education.

The institute has a very good placement cell which takes care of things related to placement. Internship was there for the students of final year. Placement and job opportunities was very good in our institute. Most of the students got recruited in the campus interview with secured job and good package. There are many job opportunities in the field of Indian Navy, public and private marine based shipping companies, Research Institutions etc.

The curriculum was a one year course comprising of two semester. The curriculum focuses on the technical knowledge related to the field of Marine Engineering. The curriculum includes production, design, functioning and maintenance of marine equipment and its operations. The curriculum was designed to focus on theoretical and practical in marine and mechanical engineering. Examinations are conducted in both the semester.
