The National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) was established by merging the Central JALMA Institute for Leprosy (CJIL Field Unit), Avadi with the Institute for Research in Medical Statistics (IRMS), Chennai. This institute was established with an objective to cover the Developments of Human resources in Epidemiology and biostatistics as well as for networking of the various ICMR and non-ICMR Institutes at the national level for epidemiological purposes, and Consultancy.
The Institute carries out a variety of research activities which include areas such as interventional studies, diseases modelling, health systems research, evaluation of health schemes and diseases control programmes, issues of statistical methodology, epidemiological investigations and clinical trials of traditional remedies. It has been conducting training programmes annually in biostatistics, controlled clinical trials and basic epidemiology for medical doctors, PG medical students and Para –medical workers.
It has expertise in the areas of biostatistics, epidemiology, epidemiology of communicable disease namely leprosy, tuberculosis and other diseases, controlled clinical trials, maternal and child health, health surveys, data processing etc. They provide online courses and majorly 3 regular courses, Masters in Physical health, Masters of Science in Biostatistics and a Doctorate degree of Epidemiology.
For Doctorate and Post Graduation courses, selection is done on the basis of the qualifying details, then a written test and a personal Interview is conducted. Candidates can download the prescribed application form from the Institute’s website.

The course includes all the necessary factors necessary for the student to learn. The course curriculum has both practical and theoretical aspects of the course. There are also frequent lab sessions that are arranged. The exams that are taken are inclusive of both practical and theory papers.
There are research papers and several important topics that are included in the course. The course is well formulated and regularly revised to keep it up to date. The course also includes various types of clinical trials and training programs for the students. The course curriculum provides specialization in the areas of biostatistics and epidemiology.
The course and exams and the studies goes on as per semester system. There are total 4 subjects in a semester Plus two other subjects which are practical. But in 4th semester the student has to do internship and after doing the internship he or she have to appear for The Viva which carries equal weighted and credits as well.
The course curriculum is not easy at all it includes principles and practice of Public Health epidemiology, biostatistics, health systems nutritions, outbreak investigation, secondary data analysis and many more subjects. The students performance is assessed on the basis of CGPA.
Master of public health is a post graduate professional course which has the duration of 2 years and follows semester system. The course structure focuses both on practical knowledge and theory. The days are usually filled with learning and exams are tiring.
The student is expected to develop the following seven technical core competencies: Understand the scope and concepts and master the methods in epidemiology, the course curriculum is not very vast and long. It is a short process. Both practical paper and theory paper included in the course. Exams are concluded once only after the course fully completes. The certificate is given after the exam results.

The course curriculum was very good. It was well designed and well presented. It consists of four semester which spreads over two years. The are both theory and practical papers. The exam structure was also good. The institute conducts two examination in each semester. One was internal assessment and the other was final examination.

The curriculum includes twelve month at National Institute of Epidemiology interspersed with three field posting of twelve months. Final examinations are conducted at the end of each semester.

Candidates seeking admission to 3- year Ph.D. program should have passed recognized qualifying Higher Specialty Degree, Post Graduate degree / Diploma with minimum marks [50% for medical degrees; 55% for non-medical degrees] in the qualifying examination or a second class or equivalent in the qualifying Post Graduate degree / Diploma.
