  • At Vancouver Island University (VIU), a lack of diversity among students, with about 80% from one group, is noticeable. This limits exposure to different cultures and perspectives, which is important for a richer learning environment.,
  • Additionally, job opportunities are scarce on the island due to the absence of major companies. This makes finding meaningful employment after putting in educational effort frustrating. Despite VIU's positives, these challenges impact the overall experience and future prospects. Hoping for improvements in diversity and job opportunities.

Placement:

The program's post-study placement and research opportunities have a distinctive focus. While smaller companies and banks are the common visitors, the number of placements is limited. However, networking activities play a crucial role in connecting students to potential job openings. Although placement options might be fewer, the emphasis on networking and individual capabilities provides an alternative route to securing meaningful roles.

My time at the university has been truly enriching. The campus's natural beauty, small class sizes, and dedicated professors have created a dynamic learning atmosphere. While there are challenges like limited job options and diversity, the personalized education, research opportunities, and sustainability focus have made this journey incredibly valuable.

  • No placements from the college. Need to work on more On - Campus work and on more placements directly from the University. Classmates were into themselves only. They should be supportive. Lack of Entrepreneurship.

Placement:

No placements at all. Have to find by yourself. They doesn’t help at all. They should work on this issue. They should invite companies on campus.

Overall Experience was good in terms of studies and extracurricular activities. Just have to work a lot more on placements.

  • I was given hard time during my internship period, there were lot of approvals involved and the process I found was tormenting and stressful as I was pressurized to get WFH approval from my company where I was doing internship during COVID. Though it was work from home internship still VIU management wanted specifically wanted in written form which was ridiculous for me to talk to my company and convince them to do something out of the way.

Placement:

It was not a great process, students are left on their own. There are few pep talk though but university did not have much ties with companies.. I hardly seen 3-4 companies who hired few marketing students from our batch.. but most of the people were on their own.

Internship:

Yes, Blackberry

Placement:

They were quite good. Nanaimo is 2 hours away from Vancouver. About an hour away from Victoria. So you have all the big MNCs present. Companies like Amazon, IPSOS, Microsoft, BBTV to name a few. So it is located in a central location is a great advantage.

Internship:

Yes, they do. I have had 2 work ops. And they help with networking as well. The hours on campus are less. But there are many other part-time jobs in the community that can help one with paying their bills.
