Staffing Questions by Topic

Recruitment and training carry the set. 24 questions mention recruitment, and 22 are about training or development. 19 questions deal with the steps of the staffing process or one of them, such as estimating manpower requirements, placement and orientation, performance appraisal, promotion and career planning, and compensation.

Recruitment questions split almost evenly between the two kinds of source: 16 are about internal sources, mainly promotions and transfers, and 15 name an external source such as campus recruitment, casual callers, direct recruitment, employment exchanges or labour contractors. The training questions ask for the benefits of training to the organisation or to employees in 7 questions, and for a named method in 9. Vestibule training and internship training come up in 4 questions each, apprenticeship in 3.

The listing format matters as much as the topic. 28 of the written questions say "any two", "any three", "any four" or "any eight", and 20 begin with "identify". 14 of them are "explain the following" questions, and 8 of those are 6-mark questions that cover three steps, three sources or three training methods each.

How to Approach the Staffing Set

Do the 15 MCQs first, in about 15 minutes. Several are assertion-reason or statement-based, and a few describe a company in two or three lines and ask which source of recruitment or method of training it used, so read the case for the clue before you look at the options.

For the written answers, count the points the question wants and stop there: "any four" means four. 17 of the written questions are long case paragraphs, and the marks in those go to quoting the line that gives the answer away, for instance a college visit pointing to campus recruitment. In a 6-mark "explain the following" answer, give each of the three parts a heading and two to three lines.

Common Mistakes in Staffing Questions

  • Mixing up training and development. Training is job-oriented, development is career-oriented, and the set asks you to identify which is which.
  • Writing the steps of the staffing process out of order. Estimating manpower requirements comes first.
  • Listing the steps of selection as if they were the steps of staffing. Preliminary screening, selection tests and the employment interview belong to selection.
  • Calling promotion an external source.
  • Answering a "limitation" MCQ with an advantage, since the stem often says "not a limitation".
  • Naming a source of recruitment without the reason it fits the case, which loses the second mark.
