As the context of healthcare delivery is changing, nurses need to be able to work flexibly, inter-professionally and collaboratively in a way that is meaningful and relevant. Increasingly, society is recognising the impact that mental health has on the function of individuals and organisations. It is therefore beneficial for nurses to be able to meet both the physical and mental health needs of individuals and their families.

This new and exciting curriculum provides the knowledge, skills and attitudes from both mental health and childrenÕs nursing for you to practice as dual registered nurse to benefit patient care and safety. You can enter as an undergraduate and the final stage of this course is studied at masterÕs level, so you can graduate with a masterÕs degree. Successful completion of the MSci Nursing (Mental Health and Child) course enables you to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as both a Mental Health nurse and as a ChildrenÕs Nurse.

Our curriculum has been developed in partnership with students, clinical partners, mentors, service users and carers. It has taken account of key local, national and international policies and priorities. It follows a Ôspiral' design to ensure that your learning in both practice and the University is structured incrementally from one year to the next, with a specific focus for each year. Early in the programme, the same modules are taken by all three fields of nursing (ChildrenÕs, Mental Health and Adult), with some shared learning with students on the MSc Nursing (Adult / ChildrenÕs / Mental Health) pre-registration programmes. In each year of the programme, you will have placements in your fields of practice, with some taught content specific to your nursing fields. However, there is increasing nursing field specialisation as the programme progresses to completion. There is also a progressive shift in focus on levels of complexity of nursing interventions:

  • Year 1 focuses on communities (local and national), health and wellbeing, lifespan and values.
  • Year 2 and 3 enables you to explore specific nursing interventions, working in partnership with patients and their families to meet care outcomes.
  • Year 4 focuses on care of people with complex health needs, including those who may have numerous problems; this requires health and social care services to be integrated to promote optimal health outcomes.

The MSci Nursing (Mental Health and Child) award helps you make a successful transition from applicant to registered nurse with a professional identity. You will learn to work both independently and collaboratively in teams, with individuals, families and communities.
