Course Curriculum Overview
I would say the course curriculum in the first year is quite good and gives a strong base . Subjects like anatomy, physiology and biochemistry are detailed and help us understand the basics needed for later years . Curriculum helps us to improve skills through labs and dissection . Exams happens regularly- we have internal assessments every months , class tests, slip tests, practicals and university exam. The frequency is fine , but the difficulty depends on the preparation . The one year compulsory internship with stipend is also very helpful in moulding us as a great dentist . Overall , the curriculum does a great job in laying down the foundation . Because of the high patient flow our hand skills will also become improve. So it helps in professional growth .
Internships Opportunities
Our course has a compulsory one year internship after the final year . A very decent amount is given as stipend ( around 30,000). This internship is designed to give students a proper clinical exposure and hand on practice in different departments. In our college high amounts of patients will come daily , so the interns will get practiced with every cases under the guidance of faculties and senior doctors . The internship also helps us building confidence, improving communication with patients, and preparing us for professional practice . There is also external posting to Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital, Chennai , one of the reputed hospitals in chennai .
Fees and Financial Aid
The yearly fees including tution fee , admission etc is 16325. Apart from this 1100 per month for hostel fee. 3450per month for mess fee . But students who studied in Tamilnadu state school need not to pay these fees . There are a lot of scholorships available such as UMIS , first graduate etc
Campus Life
My experience with campus life so far has been positive. There are cultural events , festivals and sports activities. Tamilmandram is the most celebrated event of our college . Comparatively events are less but there are some . There are different clubs and student groups. And the student council is very active and supportive. There is a library not that vast but not that small . At oresent there is only some classrooms but the construction is going on . But the classrooms are good , have powerpoints and in some have AC . There is a canteen also . Hostel is also good but a bit congested for girs . Infrastructure is good , but after the construction is done , it will be excellent .
Hostel Facilities
I stay in College hostel . There are rooms shared by 4 people , 5 people, 6 people and even 8 people( in dorms). Rooms are a bit congested . A single coat and cupboard are provided for each students. Bathrooms are common . Heaters are available in bathrooms . No wifi or study rooms . The food is okay-okay, not like home food, but decent enough for daily meals . Hostel timings are fixed for safety , wardens are approachable if any issues arises . Two lifts are there . Filtered water is available for drinking purposes ( both hot and cold are available). Overall the hostel is fine for living , though a little more space in rooms and better food variety would make the experience much better. But new big hostel is being constructed, soon we will get a very nice hostel .
Admission
I chose this college mainly because of its academic reputation and rankings . When comparing with the other colleges , this college offer a better clinical exposure opportunities. As dentistry is about skills , the more we practice the more experts we become and more skilled doctors we become . Also As A kerala native , Tamilnadu is our neighbouring state and also it is more secured state. My first priority was kerala but because of high competition and low number of seats I couldn't make it there . So my next option were this college and i got into here . The admission process is through NEET UG entrance exam , followed by counselling and document verification. Fortunately I secured admission here and I am satisfied with my choice .
Faculty
The faculties are well experienced and qualified. All of them are post graduated are experts in their respective specialties in dentistry. More than theories we have many practicals , so guidance from our faculties are really helpful . Some of the faculties are authors of some dental books also . They are strict about attendance and deadlines, but it helps to maintain discipline and become more work oriented . Usually we have one university exam per year . But apart from that we have internal assessment tests and class tests every month . It is helpful in covering all the portions before final exams . Also our college is linked with Madras medical college , so we will having medical subjects in there. Faculties in mmc are also highly qualified and experienced.
Night Life
There is no nightlife in and around the campus . There is no gym . Classes and labs closes after regular hours . The hostel has fixed in timings for girls ( 9PM ) . So all the students stay indoor after that . Boys has no timings. Outside the campus there are few cafes , restaurants, streetfoods to relax in the evenings. As chennai is one of the great cities , there are very good spots actually. On weekends we explore such spots like Malls , Theatres, Beaches , Food spots , Parks etc . The longest beach Marina beach is 2Km away from the campus . In terms of safety , the general locality is fine to roam around at evenings , but at late nights its not at safe , especially for girls . Apart from that the campus and surrounding area feel secure , with security staffs present. In the girls hostel we have 3 securities. Overall its not very `party kind' of nightlife, but still students finds to unwind through foods , casual hangouts , spending time with friends.
