Comprehensive Review on IIEST SHIBPUR

Dislikes

  • The hostels are old and dipidated. The mess food is not up to the mark. Mini buildings are in shabby and poor condition due to the lack of renovation. Many of the things are not properly well maintained like bathrooms, water cooler etc.
  • Despite having all the necessary infrastructure many of the research labs are in heavy condition due to the lack of funds. Sometimes the professors do research only for the sake of doing research and for getting funds.

Course Curriculum Overview :

I choose electrical engineering because it is close to related to my interest that is physics. The course of electrical engineering is quite hectic and challenging. It often requires to be in lab tell five or 6:00 p.m. The course curriculum is quite old and only few new things at taught. The course curriculum must include the new technologies like AI ml in Electrical engineering and preparing the students according to the present needs of the market. We also have very less software and simulation based assignments are exams which is a downpoint. As these things are quite practical and helps the students to get a clear picture of how real life engineering is done. The professors teach the course material for exams only. To get new things from the teacher you must be curious enough. The difficulty levels of the exams are moderate with ample time for preparing. The students must revise they are notes on an everyday or in weekly basis for passing the exams.

Internships Opportunities :

The students go for internship after their 6th semester. You can also do internship after your 4th or even after second semester, provided you have the required skill set. Top companies like Google Microsoft Siemens Texas instruments Tata Steel come for the internships and various roles. Some of this internships turn into PPO. In electrical domain the core companies like Texas instruments Jindal Steel works Tata Steel Siemensetc came for the internships. On the non core side companies like TCS Infosys synopsis Deloitte Goldman sach Google etc came for the internships. Students can also purse you research and friendships at various iits or other research institutes. They have to mail the professors themselves or register in various internship programs run by the iits. The the period between January till March as per applying to various summer internships and the period between October and November is for applying to winter internships. Students must actively look for various opportunities in various networking sites like LinkedIn, Intershala etc.

Placement Experience :

Students become eligible for campus placements from 7th semester onwards. There are large number of core and non core companies visiting the campus like Google Microsoft Texas instruments Deloitte Morgan Stanley Goldman Sachs etc The highest package was 55 lpa and the average package is 14 to 15 lpa. Almost all of the students get placed and few of them go into research and higher studies. After getting the degree I will give gate and seek job options in various PSU.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

At IEST shibpur the semester fees for semester is around 68000 including the tuition fees and other miscellaneous fees. For SC and ST candidates the tuition fee is fully waived. The college provides 2/3 Rd waiver and full waiver for needy students having the family income between 1 to 5 lacs and less than 1 lakh. Our college also provides scholarships which are provided by the alumni(GAABESU) . This includes excellence fellowships, research scholarships and need based merit scholarships.

Campus Life :

Mostly all of the techfest of the various departments and the institute once takes place during the month of February March. The college hosts the largest technical test of Kolkata, in which various companies entrepreneurs, leaders, alumni come and and take various workshops and seminars. The college library named Ramanujan central library host lakhs of books and journals. It has a online database that has one of the largest collection of books in Asia. The classrooms are ordinary college classrooms equipped with ac, ample space for sitting and clear visibility from even the last bench. Our college hosts inter NIT and inter IIT sports contest for football basketball volleyball tennis badminton swimming etc. There are a large number of college societies and clubs in which the students can be engaged. We have literary society, robotic society, dance and music society, art and craft society, etc. Inspite of having all the clubs and societies the real engagement of students in these is quiet low.

Admission :

I applied to many other colleges like IISC and all. As I am interested in research that's why I was research driven from the beginning. Due to my failure in JEE advanced I could not get IISC. Through JOSAA counselling I got electrical engineering in first round. The course of electrical engineering closely matches my interests. I got both NIT Durgapur as well as to Shibpur but considering my closeness to my hometown I choose IIEST SHIBPUR over NIT Durgapur. THE ADMISSION IN B.TECH COURSES IS THROUGH JEE MAINS. Rank of around 35 to 40000 is good enough to get you any branch at IIEST Shibpur. But for noncore branches like cs and it you must target a rank of around 10000. Take any branch you got through Jossa counselling and study hard in the first year so that you can change your branch in the 2nd year.

Faculty :

The faculty to student ratio is quite good. The professors are quite approachable for asking any academic doubts or anything else. Due to obvious reasons we cannot openly speak about the names of the professors but all I can say is that they are very helpful. But sometimes they can be quite strict. Like for attendance or submission of assignments. Two exams are held one is midterm and one is end term. The midterm is of 30 marks and the anthem is a 50 marks. The remaining 20 marks includes attendance assignments and class tests. Truly speaking the course curriculum is quite old and not up to the latest standards. The exams are generally manageable and the students can easily pass if they study hard. The students have to be willing to put effort on their own for learning new things and skills as they would be required for getting any job or internships.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The curriculum is well developed and the major areas of learning are adequately addressed. It has prepared students for practice as well as for further education. I wanted to point at such aspects of teaching design that need to be developed : offerings of practical projects and a greater focus on interactive teaching methods. Exams are scheduledd but may prove to need extra assistane for comprehension of some of the contents.

The students get eligible at 3rd year 6th sem. Though before that you can do internship or freelancing which will increase the weight of your profile. The percentage of student getting placement is around 60-70% and the average package is around 4-5lakhs per annum. The highest package got by a student previous year was around ?10lakhs per annum.

After 6th semester student become eligible for the campus placements. Amul(GCMF) , Mother Dairy, Vidya Dairy, Bhagirathi cooperative, Wamul, ITC are the company's visited and they provide good packages according to the students work in interview. After getting the degree I would pursue my hair studies in Mtech Food Technology from IIT or go to MBA course from IIM. My main goal is to get NDRI National Dairy Research Institute which is top institute for imparting dairy and veterinary courses for MTech Dairy Technology. 70 to 80% of the students are being placed and the packages very from 20 lakh per anum to 40 lakh per annum. After getting BTech degree most of the students preferred to go for higher studies and job. Research line is open for our course. Most girls prefer higher studies and research line and most boys prefer for job.
