Remarks :
In a nutshell, it was the best experience I had, not just academic but from an overall point of view. Often they say, JU is not a university, it is an Emotion. Well, you need to be there, experience the ambiance and then, I'm sure you'll agree with what they say.
Entrance Preview :
I took WBJEE in 2009. There were two papers: one completely on Mathematics, other one was Physics & Chemistry and the syllabus for the exam was typical XII level. I secured 419 rank and opted for Mechanical Engineering dept. There are lots of core mechanical engineering industrial companies those hire graduate engineers from JU and this was my motivation behind selection of this very course.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The course was EXCELLENT and thorough. I have done MTech from IIT Madras and doing PhD at IITKGP; I can assure that the quality of teaching is comparable to the best institutes of our country, if not the best. Many faculties of the department are renowned names over the country; they specialise in various fields of mechanical engineering. I'm sure that the students will be able to develop a strong base on mechanical engineering after completion of this course.
Internships Opportunities :
The college provides a limited number of internship opportunities. A few students (7-8 apps from Engineering section) gets the opportunity of DAAD WISE scholarship to carry out research in Germany during 3rd year of curriculum. Also, some companion recruit interns (e.g. Tata Steel, IOCL etc.) from campus and they even give Pre Placement Offers to students. The academic section at administration department will be able to help with other options of internship in detail.
Placement Experience :
The job prospects is good. In my batch there were almost 90 students and 80-85 students got at least one job from campus recruitment. Renowned core companies like Bajaj Auto, L&T, MN Dastur, McNally Bharat, Thermax, Tata Motors, Tata Technology, Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra etc. and IT companies like TCS, CTS etc. recruit mechanical engineering graduates from JU. Different companies set different cutoff CGPA (in 2013, most of the companies set minimum 6.5 as their cutoff - this info may not be useful now). They generally take apptitude test followed by group discussion and personal interview. The average CTC is generally Rs 4.5 LPA.
College Events :
1. Freshers Football 2. Inter Departmental Football 3. Inter Departmental Cricket 4. Freshers Welcome 5. U-Turn (cultural program) 6. Sanskriti (annual cultural meet) 7. Mechanical Engineering Reunion If I start counting, the list will go on and on and on.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
The fee is probably one of the cheapest in our country. I paid Rs 5160 for first two years and Rs 2450 for next two years each. For each semester, the exam fee was Rs 64 and for convocation, Rs 300. Yes !!! As cheap as this !!! However, the scenario may be different now but surely, it is still one of the cheapest in India. So, I'll say it's very feasible.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
I don't have much information regarding this matter. I believe, the administration will be able to help the best.
Campus Life :
The campus life is something that every Jadavpurian misses, I am sure. Either football, or cricket, or cultural program, or music, recitation, debate, quiz or gatherings at canteens, having a nice food over a discussion of national or international politics, literature and so on --- there is always something going on from dawn to dusk. Irrespective of caste, creed, religion, gender --- everybody gets themselves attached to the campus for life.
Hostel Facilities :
I have not stayed in hostel but I had friends who stayed there. They were happy with the hostel and the food. It was quite cheap. They even provide concession to needy students. There is a main hostel at walking distance from the campus. There is also another boys and a girls hostel inside the campus. There are lots of PGs, rents, messes available in the locality. On an average, I believe Rs. 5000 per month should be enough for accommodation and food.
Alumni/Alumna :
Now that Facebook and other social networking sites are there, the alumni network has become very strong. There, often posts about different a job opportunities at different companies. Also, there is annual reunion program.
Exam Structure :
For each subject, there are typically two class tests and one final end semester examination. Combining these, a student is graded on a scale of 10, 10 being highest. The scale is absolute i.e. a score between 70-79 ensures B grade; to secure A grade, one must score 80-89. After all the scores are declared, a cumulative grade point average is carried out to declare the semester result. There are slots of mid semester exam and end semester exam and in that time the exams are carried out. There are not loads of exam generally.
Admission :
The admission process was smooth. I went to the counselling centre with my rank card and other documents and there the seats of different universities for different courses were being filled according to rank. There I opted for Mechanical Engineering at JU and after a few days, I reported at JU with relevant documents and receipt of first 2 years fee payment (₹ 5160) and got admitted. However, now a days, the counselling is being conducted online. But, the after processing is still the same I guess. It's not a very difficult process to go through.
Faculty :
There are more that 70 faculty members in this department. They specialise in various fields and together, they cover a large spectrum in mechanical engineering. They are very thorough when it comes to teach. They also encourage enthusiastic students in research works that they are involved in. They help in getting internship at industry or academic institutions. The guidance that I got from my teachers at JU in my time was a great experience.
