CIFE-MUMBAI- dream land for fisheries aspirants

Remarks :

I chose this college for pursuing master's degree because it is India's best government fisheries science University. Earlier, ICAR conducted the AIEEA PG examination but from 2018, NTA started conducting this examination in online mode. The exams are usually held in between July and August month. There are 96 seats at present in this university. It has four sub-centers located in different parts of the country undertaking research in different aquatic environment. Lab facilities are excellent and is well equipped with instruments of present day need. One can work under different on going projects like DBT and NAHEP which are world bank funded projects to enhance the experience. Academic session is held only in Mumbai center but research can be done in the center itself or in the various sub centers as per one's interest. Since it is a central government college the facilities it provides is better than any other college and the exposure is also great along with the qualified scientists .

Course Curriculum Overview :

I am doing specialization in aquaculture for my master degree. It is a two year course wherein first year is the academic year and second year is the research year. Aquaculture is considered as the mother subject in fisheries science. Teacher Student ratio is 1:13 . Each teacher can very well guide two students for research. Each teacher is actually an ARS qualified scientist. As of now, a master degree student can appear for ARS exam post. According to the new notice, which shall apply from 2022, it will be mandatory for a student to have a PhD degree in order to appear for ARS exam. Teaching is mostly practical based and we get a chance to be a part of various institutional training. Exams are conducted in the predicted time. Few minor courses(from other departments) and supporting course viz. Statistics require attention more than the others and are difficult to pass otherwise major courses require understanding to answer.

Placement Experience :

No campus placement is provided. One can find employment in Various feed companies, as SRF in various on going projects, and as assistant professor (after clearing ICAR-NET), associate professor, contract based teaching. After qualifying for ARS-NET, one is employed as a scientist in various research institutions. There is a huge scope for entrepreneurship in this sector with the help of government subsidies.

We need to pay our fees on yearly basis at the rate of 19000/year. Students are provided with PG(JRF) and institutional scholarships at the rate of 12000/month and 7560/month respectively based on the ranks. In addition to this contingency of 12000 is also provided by the University to all the students.

Campus Life :

The university is located in the heart of Mumbai with best of the facilities. The old campus has a academic building, RAS(advanced fish system) unit and hostel for PG-boys and staff quarter.
