Entrance Preview :
IITJEE- Rank 545 (General)I was always inclined towards a career in core engineering and IIT being the best college in India for engineering, it was an obvious choice for me.
Course Curriculum Overview :
Course curriculum had courses in all fields of mechanical engineering, like introductory courses in thermodynamics, mechanics of materials and fluid mechanics as well as general courses like engineering drawing, physics and chemistry. From second year onwards, the curriculum became more specific and we had advanced courses in mechanism of machines, thermal design, gas turbines, CFD, finite element, etc.
Internships Opportunities :
I did my internship at Daikin industries, Japan and most of the work was in the field of CFD, and experiments related to efficiency of its heat exchangers. The stipend was a total of 130000 INR for 2 months, besides the usual accommodation and travel allowances. I enjoyed the work since it was related to my areas of interest in mechanical engineering.
Placement Experience :
Almost all the students get placed and average placements for my branch are around 7-8 lacs INR. Computer science students usually get paid more, and companies are from diverse sectors, like FMCGs (like HUL, ITC), banking, finance, consulting, a lot of startups also joined in this year, giving lucrative packages and good job profiles (around 15-20 lacs INR).
Fee Structure And Facilities :
The fee structure is somewhat feasible as compared to other engineering colleges in India. We only pay around 30,000 INR as tution fees and around 17-18,000 INR as mess fees, making the total fees around 50,000 INR per semester.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Scholarships are granted on a merit-cum-means basis, where people with income less than 5,00,000 INR get this scholarship. There are various other scholarships too, which almost make the tution fees free. Also, students getting a rank in the top 7% students in their department, get a prize of 2500 INR per semester.
Campus Life :
Gender ratios are pretty skewed. In my department, we have only 1 girl and 100 boys. Similar situation is there in other departments, although a little better. People give a lot of importance to extra curricular activities like dancing, music, singing and sports. We have inter iit competition for sports and every month atleast 3-4 competitive events are held for these extra curricular activities.
Alumni/Alumna :
The alumni network is very good, and every year an alumni meet is held in the campus for alumni from 20-30 years old batches. These people have established their careers quite well, and interacting with them gives a good boost to our social network outside the campus, helping us to get jobs, or funding for our ventures. Senior students are very helpful and give the best advice, having faced the same troubles during their college life as well. Most of the students get a mentor in first year who is a senior, and guides them throughout their time at IIT.
Exam Structure :
Labs are held on a regular basis and usually, we get only 1-2 days where we are free in the afternoon, otherwise classes go on till 5-6 in the evening, making it an overall hectic schedule. We have 2 sets of minor exams held after 1/3rd and 2/3rd of the semester, and 1 major exam held at the end of the semester. Even practical components and assignments have considerable weightage in the final result.
Faculty :
Faculty is brilliant in terms of their own knowledge of the subjects as well as their friendliness towards the students. They are always willing to help at any point during the day and always encourage the students to do better in the projects.
