What do you think of IIT Hyderabad launching India's first B Tech in artificial Intelligence?

SA
Shruti Agarwal Posted On : May 9th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH)

We have witnessed a shift from the EE department to the CSE department due to advancements in computer science. Today, CS is indispensable in every field. AI field is similarly gaining momentum and is expected to reach heights in the future. To make the most out of AI, some universities have started including this course in their current curriculum while the more passionate ones have chosen to create a separate department dedicated to it. For instance, MIT and CMU have recognized the hidden potential of AI and are already establishing a separate department for it.

Many are concerned if IIT Hyderabad will be able to tap the potential of AI rightly or not. However, the MTech in Machine Learning Program offered by IIT Hyderabad is a living example of how well they will be able to establish the AI branch as well.

IIT Hyderabad has some great faculty both in the CSE and EE Department who have great experiences in the field of machine learning, computer vision, speech and image processing, NLP, text processing, statistics and probability, etc.

However, it’s recommended that people go through the curriculum and talk to seniors before taking up this course. Genuine passion and interest in this field is required to take up this course else you will end up regretting your decision.

IIT Hyderabad is the first institute in India to launch a BTech program on AI engineering. I think the credibility of a certain field can be judged by its cutoff and the cutoff of AI has been seen as giving an edge to CSE of IIT Hyderabad and other old IITs.

Which one should I choose, artificial intelligence in IIT Jodhpur or mechanical at IIT Guwahati?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : May 5th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

Artificial Intelligence is a specialization that is expected to be in high demand in the near future and its scope is yet to be determined. I don’t think it’s safe to go for a newly launched field that too from a new IIT. The program and institution both lack the necessary credibility. I would recommend you go for a general branch at a new IIT, a specialization like AI from a well-reputed institute. There are many factors one should consider like faculty, subject content, etc before going for a new specialization.

Mechanical at IIT Guwahati on the other hand is a very safe choice considering the high credibility of the long-standing Institute.

How much CGPA is needed for a branch change at IIT Hyderabad to CSE or artificial intelligence?

DD
Devendra Dharani Posted On : May 16th, 2023
M.tech at IIT Hyderabad

Due to the increased demand for specialization, many students can be found transferring their branches to Artificial Intelligence departments since those provide better placement opportunities and high salary packages.

There is no specific CGPA requirement needed for a branch change. However, in accordance with the branch change policy, no department can take more than 10 % of its current number of students through the provision of Branch Change. So a branch that has 50 students can only admit 5 top students from other branches.

Hence it can be concluded that there is no specific CGPA required for branch change. It all depends on the competition between the students. However, based on one of my friends' experiences, the approximate CGPA required for branch change to AI or CS is around 9.6-9.8 in the first semester. Please note that this is just an approximate figure as there are no fixed criteria.

  • In order to meet the growing demand for students, IIT-G has introduced a new MTech program in data science. IIT Madras also offers dual degree specializations in robotics and data science.

  • IIT Roorkee offers online certification courses in courses on emerging technologies like AI, machine learning, computer vision, etc.

However, IIT Hyderabad is the first institute to offer a B.Tech program in Artificial Intelligence and puts much emphasis on core areas such as Natural Language Processing, Game Theory, Reinforcement Learning, Multi-agent systems, Search, Planning, and Reasoning.

AI - IIT Hyderabad:

Admission:

  • Admission to the B.Tech AI program at IIT Hyderabad is done through scores obtained in the JEE Advanced Entrance Test.

  • According to the 2019 data, the required cutoff for securing a seat in AI at IIT Hyderabad is 657.
