Should I take MSc Maths at BITS Pilani?

SD
Shruti Dasgupta Posted On : July 3rd, 2023
Student at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani

Let me clear the general misconception that the level of MSc Maths at BITS Pilani is similar to the 10+2 level. Class 12th Maths is highly analytical while MSc Maths is full of definitions, theories, and proofs. The pedagogy adopted is poor and the majority of students study this subject despite a lack of interest.

For someone who has no interest in Analytical stuff, courses such as ERA, Topology, and Functional Analysis can be very challenging. Some courses which will intrigue you will be of no use because BITS follows the relative grading system where you are graded according to how well you perform as compared to others.

Overall, if you like complex theories and expressions then go for it, but if you too have no interest in complex theories it’s better to not take it.

While many claims that Maths+CS is the best combo, let me tell you that you can take 3–4 Maths courses that help in CS as electives in your CS degree. MSc in Maths is a suitable option only if you are willing to pursue a career in Mathematical research, else the best dual degree option is MSc in Economics. The curriculum is light and knowledgeable.

Should I take NIT Surat for mechanical engineering or BITS Goa for an MSc in maths?

RS
Riya Siyar Posted On : August 24th, 2021
Studies M.Sc in Mathematics at BITS Pilani, 2021

There are different viewpoints for the same question. It primarily depends upon what is best for you, and whether or not the course you are willing to take interests you.

One of my friends encountered a similar problem likewise, and addressing the same, here are some points you might want to consider before diving into any conclusion,

  1. A dual degree in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry is claimed as a part of Science, while others are considered in the case of Engineering. You will learn the theories of science instead of the application of technology.
  2. In Mathematics, you are supposed to learn the series of higher-order and their respective application. While, in Mechanical Engineering, you will learn more deeply about Engines, Boilers, Automobiles, Refrigerator Systems, and much more.
  3. A single degree, like Mechanical Engineering, CSE, EE, Civil Engineering, or Chemical Engineering, can be more advantageous than dual degrees.
  4. If you opt for a dual degree in Mathematics, you have a higher probability of becoming a mathematician or a professor. But, in case you pursue Mechanical Engineering from NIT Surat, then you bear higher chances of securing a placement offer at top-tier MNCs.
  5. Your choice should always remain ahead of most others. The one piece of advice is that in NIT Surat, you supposedly cannot change your degree from M.Sc to B.Tech following the 1st year and vice versa.

You should research the same for BITS Goa and find whether or not the rule is similarly applicable in the institute. This is the basic difference you can find between both institutes.

Will SBI Bank give a education loan to a student of MSc Maths at Bits Goa?

PN
Pooja Narayan Posted On : May 3rd, 2023
Studies at BITS Pilani, K. K. Birla Goa Campus (2025)

Yes, SBI Bank offers education loans to students pursuing MSc Maths at BITS Goa. SBI Bank is one of the leading banks in India and provides education loans to eligible students who wish to pursue higher studies in India or abroad.

To be eligible for an education loan from SBI Bank, the student must meet certain criteria, such as:

  • The student should be an Indian national
  • The student should have secured admission to a recognized course in a recognized institution in India or abroad
  • The student should have a good academic record
  • The student should have a co-borrower who has a steady source of income

In addition, the bank may also require certain documents, such as proof of admission, the fee structure of the course, academic records, income proof of co-borrower, etc.

Once the loan is approved, the bank will disburse the loan amount directly to the institute, as per the fee structure of the course. The student will be required to start repaying the loan after the completion of the course or after getting a job, whichever is earlier. The repayment period can vary from bank to bank and can be up to 15 years.

Therefore, if you are planning to pursue MSc Maths at BITS Goa and are looking for financial assistance, SBI Bank can be a good option for an education loan.

Which one will be a better choice for an MSc in maths, IISc, ISI Kolkata, or IIT KGP?

AR
Arnav Roy Posted On : July 17th, 2023
Lives in Kolkata, West Bengal, India

While all three institutes are prestigious institutes, my sister chose ISI Kolkata for a number of reasons. Here are a few reasons

  • ISI Kolkata is the best institute when it comes to Maths and it is ranked #1401+ in QS World University Rankings 2024. Its flagship course is B.Stat.
  • In this modern era, Statistics is highly demanded and ISI opens opportunities in the same.
  • The placement scenario of ISI Kolkata is at par with the top IITS. The average package recorded is INR 25.50 LPA while the highest stood at INR 89 LPA.
  • The institute offers a full scholarship and currently, a number of ISI pass-outs are undergoing PhD programs in top foreign universities.
  • ISI has no tuition fees except hostel fees. In fact, students get an annual scholarship of Rs. 36,000/-.
  • The small batch size improved the student-teacher ratio as a result all students got individual attention.
  • The accommodation facilities are great and students are allotted single occupancy rooms.

ISI Kolkata is a great option as it offers opportunities in both, jobs and higher education.
