What are the pros and cons of doing an MD in psychiatry at KGMU or CIP in Ranchi?

AR

I can shed some light on the Psychiatry department of CIP Ranchi.

I don’t have much information about KGMU. But as far as CIP Ranchi is considered, the only academic pro is its enormous patient load. This offers a great exposure. Other than that, you’ll meet good peers and seniors. The biggest con, on the other hand, is the anti research attitude. People aren’t encouraged towards research. Only after you start publishing papers, do others invite you to their work.

But also, a lot has changed at CIP Ranchi in the past years. So I recommend you approach some seniors from both the colleges before arriving at a decision.

What 10 things would you tell a student who is about to start MBBS from KGMU?

ST

Studied at KGMU

Here are 10 things I would tell a student who is about to start MBBS from KGMU-

  1. It is an excellent college which will help you become a skilled medical professional.
  2. Stay away from caste based politics. Do not attend caste and category based meets. Be liberal and respect all your colleagues, regardless of their caste/region/religion.
  3. Do attend OPDs, clinical posting and present cases. This will provide you with a lot of experience.
  4. Non vegetarians have much more food options than vegetarians. But even as a vegetarian, you will get good meals.
  5. Do visit Hazratganj. Sitting on a bench in the evenings and watching passersby is the best thing to do there.
  6. Explore the sports room, gym and library of Sardar Patel Hostel. Chakraborty hostel has a nice swimming pool.
  7. Lucknow is an amazing city, do explore it.
  8. Start your PG entrance preparation early on. The state of UPPG exams is bad, but don’t lose hope, you still have a good chance elsewhere.
  9. Studies must be your first priority.

Remember all these things, study well, and make the most of your stay at KGMU.

Which is better to join for an MBBS, GMC Patiala, GMC Mumbai, Seth GS Medical College, KGMU, or GMCH Chandigarh?

AB
Advaith Bhaskar Posted On : September 30th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India (2000–present)

Based on the opinions within the medical community, I will provide some information on these colleges-

  1. GSMC- It is a highly renowned college. High rankers in UG and PG entrance choose it for pursuing their medical studies. Clinical teaching is very good over here.
  2. Grant Medical College Mumbai- It is one of the top 10 medical colleges of India. But its fees have skyrocketed recently. The campus is not in a good shape too. However, this college is one of the only 5 colleges whose degrees are approved in Singapore. So if you plan to pursue your PG abroad, a degree from GMC Mumbai will open the doors of Singapore for you.
  3. KGMU- It is one of the best medical colleges in North India, and especially UP. It is well reputed, and the campus is really good. The infrastructure is top notch, better than most government colleges. The teachers are decent, and the students are hardworking. You’ll get a good clinical exposure over here. For an outsider though, adjusting to the UP culture might be a little difficult at first.

I don’t know much about GMC Patiala and GMCH Chandigarh, so I won’t comment on these two.

Make sure to choose a college with hardworking students. Good company will motivate you to study harder and excel in your field. Food and language barriers aren’t much of a problem in the long run.

The best way to determine the right college for M.B.B.S. is to analyze the pros and cons of these colleges individually

KGMU Pros

  • Ikr of the highly ranked medical college ranked 45 out of 200 colleges in India in 2023 by NIRF.
  • It’s located in a more developed and bigger city and has a huge beautiful campus.
  • Offers excellent clinical exposure
  • It has a 50% state PG quota
  • It receives huge funds from the state government.

KGMU Cons

  • It’s a State medical college
  • It’s pay scale is quite less in comparison to Central colleges
  • It has less number of pg seats
  • The college has caste-based reservations.
  • Students are required to serve the rural service bond

JNMC AMU Pros

  • It’s a central government institute so has better pay grades as compared to state colleges
  • There is a 50% internal reservation, with no caste boundaries
  • Internal are also eligible for external seats so if you get a good rank you can easily get a seat in the open category.
  • It has a better UG-PG seat ratio
  • You don’t have to serve any kind of service bond
  • Better academic ambiance and clinical exposure.
  • A completely ragging-free campus

JNMC AMU Cons

  • There is no state quota in the PG
  • Does not have a very good reputation so receives less funding.
  • Aligarh is not a big city as compared to Lucknow.

Considering the above points, choose wisely!

KGMU vs JIPMER, which is better overall in terms of academics, hostels and campus life?

SS
Shridhar Sriraman Posted On : September 30th, 2023
Lives in Pondicherry, Puducherry, India

Here is some information about both these colleges to help you make a better decision-

  1. JIPMER is the AIIMS of South. It has a better academic culture. Everything, from peer groups to labs, is top-notch over there. Both the colleges have decent hostels.
  2. JIPMER has a bit more exciting campus life. But KGMU makes up for this with its festive celebrations.
  3. JIPMER puts great emphasis on student research, so student learning is supposedly better. The internships are immensely rigorous over there.
  4. Lucknow serves really good chicken meals. At KGMU, you’ll get good non veg meals. People from the North face food and language barriers at JIPMER, but they adapt eventually.

Based on this information, I would say that JIPMER is overall better. However, even KGMU is a really good choice for your medical studies.

With around 645 marks in this year's NEET, can I expect a seat in KGMU, Lucknow with UP state quota (UR)?

AR
Ashutosh Roy Posted On : September 30th, 2023
MBBS Medicine and Healthcare, King George's Medical University (2018)

During 2019, the cutoff for general category through UP state quota was 637 marks for KGMU. Based on this data, there is a possibility of your admission into this college.

However, the cutoff varies each year, depending on the participating students and the paper level. If things don’t work out, you can go for mop-up round. In it, with 645 marks, there is a good chance that you’ll get KGMU. Otherwise, you can look for other UP colleges like RML, GSVM, GIMS, etc. These are worth considering too.

I have an option to choose from GMC/GSMC, Mumbai and KGMU lucknow for MBBS. Which college should I opt for?

AG
Akriti Gupta Posted On : September 30th, 2023
lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

I will try to answer this query as per my limited knowledge.

As for GMC, its teaching standards have declined. The classes aren’t as rich as in previous times. Even the study culture isn’t as good now. Only the brand name remains. Because of this, GSMC is currently much better ranked than GMC. So if you are from Lucknow, choose KGMU over GMC Mumbai. MBBS is quite stressful, and homely support does a lot for mental health.

Both GSMC and KGMU are good medical colleges. Choosing between these is a bit difficult. Research on the condition of PG reservation at Maharashtra colleges, and Provincial Health Services (PHS) rule in UP. This will help you make a better decision.

Both GSMC Mumbai and KGMU are excellent choices.Choose between the two based on various factors that I have listed above.
