How is the hostel in IIT Gandhinagar?

AS

Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGN)

IIT Gandhinagar has some of the best hostels among all the IITs. My cousin studying here once visited IIT Roorkee for the Inter-IIT cultural meet and concluded that their own hostels were the best. Additionally, she also participated in Invent@IITGN wherein she worked with people from 8 other IITs. They too said the same things that IIT Gandhinagar has the best hostel and mess facilities

Here are some detailed features of the accommodation facilities here

  • Apart from IIT Jodhpur, IIT Gandhinagar is the only IIT that has air-conditioned hostel rooms.
  • There are no restrictions on boys and girls visiting each other's hostel.
  • The hostels provide basic electrical appliances like a fridge, an oven, a water cooler, and an induction stove on every floor.
  • IIT Gandhinagar hostel rooms are well-designed with large single and double rooms comprising basic amenities like a desk, a chair, a bed,  a fan, and a cupboard.
  • Students have access to warm water at any time of the day.
  • There are a wide variety of eateries like Amul Store, Tea Post, Sainath Canteen, Dawat Canteen, Grocers, General Store, Mahavir Healthy Foods, Anytime Snacks, and a salon operating in the hostel buildings.
  • The food served in the mess is actually good and there is even dessert for dinner.
  • The students can enjoy their choice of sports at Badminton, volleyball, and basketball courts just next to the hostels.
  • There is a  student lounge in the hostel area with air hockey, foosball, snooker, and other indoor games.

In a nutshell, the hostels at IIT Gandhinagar are the best among all IITs!

What is your motivation for applying to IIT Gandhinagar?

AS

Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGN)

I don’t know what or who convinced you to go for IIT Gandhinagar, but if it’s not too late please reconsider your decision. Here are some points that will help you understand my strong aversion to IIT Gandhinagar.

  • The hostel fees are extremely high around 27-30k/- semester. Additionally, they charge you more if you are staying in the hostel during vacations.
  • There are no laundry facilities available in the hostel
  • The rooms towards the interior are in pathetic condition
  • The labs are very small and have substandard equipment
  • They force you to attend the orientation program. Those who don’t suffer a lot and are deprived of Scholarships and you will be asked to do it again the following year
  • The Management system is extremely poor and lethargic.

Irrespective of these points, the short video below might convince you to join IIT Gandhinagar

So, I will advise you to go for IIT Gandhinagar only if it’s the last option available.

Should I opt for CSE in IIT Gandhinagar?

YA
Yash Arora Posted On : July 15th, 2023
IIM Bangalore | IIT Gandhinagar

IIT Gandhinagar CSE is a well-regarded program and despite being newly launched it has gained popularity in a short time period. This in itself is a testament to the quality of education offered here. The institute fairs well in almost all aspects be it faculty, opportunities, internships, and projects, etc.

The new IITs have their own weaknesses and strengths. Even the departments within an institute are not at the same level. The CSE department of IIT Gandhinagar is certainly superior among other branches of the institute and the institute itself is better than other new IITs.  The professors here have high qualifications and a strong research profile.

In all, you should certainly join CAE at IIT Gandhinagar if you want to experience a good campus life, with locational advantages, and excellent placements.

Why is IIT Gandhinagar behaving more like a private college and less like an IIT?

YA
Yash Arora Posted On : July 27th, 2023
IIM Bangalore | IIT Gandhinagar

I fail to understand what you mean by ‘behaving more like a private college’ and from where such a question stems from. If your comparison of IIT Gandhinagar with private colleges is to point out its features uncommon to other IITs then maybe yes, IIT Ganghinagar is certainly a bit different from the usual IIT standards.

Consider the following points to understand this further:

  • It is one of the fastest growing second generation IITs, that were established in 2008.
  • The institute is well known for its highly flexible branch change policies, curriculum, cutting-edge research, and top-notch placement opportunities.
  • The flexibility in the curriculum can be seen through the wide range of options of dual majors, minors, honors, course range, and short courses.
  • It has ties with several foreign universities and thus provides great study-abroad opportunities to UG, PG, and Ph.D. students in the form of semesters overseas, research internships, summer programs, etc.
  • Another distinctive feature includes harmony between different disciplines with 7 Interdisciplinary Research Centres. All the departments have common research facilities and there isn't any kind of monopoly.
  • The institute highly focuses on Project-oriented-learning that gives the students a practical approach to theoretical concepts.
  • IIT Gandhinagar has some highly renowned faculty and the majority of the professors are PhD holders from top foreign institutes like Cambridge, Harvard, MIT, etc.
  • Another unique initiative is the Non-degree Program wherein students from non-IIT institutes take part-time/full-time courses and get to spend an entire semester at IIT Gandhinagar.

The list is not exhaustive and IIT Gandhinagar indeed is a unique IIT that has made its mark alone without the help of the IIT tag. It focuses on both the professional as well as personal development of its students, faculty, and staff. If you call such fast-paced growth ‘behaving like private colleges’ then it is what it is.

Why is IIT Gandhinagar behaving more like a private college and less like an IIT?

PJ
Pritam Jain Posted On : February 20th, 2021
B.Tech. Electrical Engineering IIT Gandhinagar

A senior of mine recently completed her M.Tech from IIT Gandhinagar. The following answer is based on her experience.

It has been heard a lot that IIT Gandhinagar is behaving more like a private college or a death brand IIT or a business enterprise. Some of the following points are looked at when such questions are asked:

  • IIT Gandhinagar is one of the fastest-growing second-generation IITs started in 2008-09. The institute has recently completed 11 years.
  • The institute aims to empower students with branch change policies which are the most liberal in nature, well-managed services provided by the library, groundbreaking research, innovations that are cutting edge, and attractive placement opportunities.
  • Students are given choice and flexibility in case of choosing dual majors, minors, honors, course range, and short courses.
  • IIT Gandhinagar is one of the most globalized campuses in India. It offers opportunities for studying abroad in the form of research internships, summer programs, semesters overseas, etc.
  • The institute promotes maximum interactions between different disciplines with 7 Interdisciplinary Research Centres. The infrastructure in research is commonly shared and is not a monopoly.
  • The institute promotes learning that is project-oriented which puts emphasis on learning by doing.
  • Humanities cover 20% of the network and core requirements are in the sciences, design, and innovation in various fields.

The above points are some of the distinctive features which make the institute stand out. It continuously fights for the personal and multi-dimensional development of the students, staff, and faculty.

Playing the blame game is easy but it can be difficult to see the positives sometimes. In a decade, the institute has given a number of unique initiatives which are now being emulated by other institutes across India.

What are the scopes after doing an MSc in cognitive science from IIT Gandhinagar?

MT
Manav Tiwari Posted On : February 20th, 2021
B.Tech Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (2019)

There will be brilliant job prospects. We often gauge our job opportunities by thinking about the most attractive starting salaries. This is not a justified point of view because the economical condition of India and the educational system of India leave much to be desired.

Cognitive science deals with our awareness of objects, the exact chain of events that take place in our brain, and the mechanism behind them. The subject is a difficult one and it involves anatomy, physiology, neuro- biochemistry, and psychology.

  • The scope of employment in robotics, artificial intelligence in India is huge.
  • The same can be said in the case of European countries and the USA. If you are unique with your work, then you need to worry about your results.
  • There is an institute in Seattle which specializes in consciousness studies.
  • There can also be a hidden agenda in the USA that they will use your conscience as an influencing tool.

MSc in cognitive science pertains to consciousness which is considered as a product of the activity of the brain which is a misconception. You get your degree awarded by employing methods that are scientifically accepted.

While doing your independent research, you can prepare an algorithm by assuming consciousness as an entity that is independent in proceeding further, instead of opting for a beaten path. In case you find success in finding a one bit of the chain of events in cognition, you will be famous overnight.
