Meta to support research of NLSIU-IIT-B to transform India's consumer grievance redressal system

New Delhi: Meta has announced its support for the research initiative conducted by the National Law School of India University-Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (NLSIU-IIT Bombay) in collaboration with GenAI Bangalore. This project is focused on the digital transformation of India's Consumer Grievance Redressal System.

The NLSIU - IIT-Bombay research will evaluate the application of Large Language Models (LLM) in constructing public solutions and enhancing the efficiency of the grievance redressal system.

IIT Bombay, in partnership with the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA), serves as the knowledge partner for this research project. The decision assist tool developed in this initiative aims to facilitate case law searches and document summarization, providing valuable support to judicial authorities in consumer affairs.

The project will also delve into the ways in which Large Language Models (LLM) can aid consumers and judicial authorities. As part of their commitment to responsible innovation, NLSIU and IIT Bombay will release a white paper detailing the implemented risk mitigation approaches and the incorporation of responsible design principles at every layer of the stack, as stated in the official announcement.

The research project aims to investigate the potential use of Llama 2, Meta's openly available large language model, in developing and assessing a proof of concept for a citizen-centric chatbot and a decision-assist tool within the domain of consumer law.

Focused on improving efficiency, the chatbot will be structured to assist consumers in understanding procedural aspects, aiding them in drafting complaints, and addressing queries related to consumer law in India.

During the launch event, Sudhir Krishnaswamy, the Vice-Chancellor of NLSIU Faculty, expressed the university's commitment to academic research and legal innovation through Artificial Intelligence to reform the legal system. This consumer law project aims to raise awareness of consumer rights and provide accessible assistance by harnessing the capabilities of Llama 2.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted that NLSIU, with its proficiency in interdisciplinary research, is uniquely poised to play a leading role in developing legal applications utilizing large language models.

He mentioned plans to build a comprehensive corpus of Indian legal resources for mapping the consumer dispute landscape in the country. This corpus would be utilized to train the Llama model. The Vice-Chancellor, further, added that their commitment to ensuring that the data inputted into the model is relevant, reliable, and user-friendly.
