LPU Welcomes 43 Students from Spain’s University of Alcala (UAH) to Study Indian Architecture

New Delhi: Lovely Professional University (LPU) and Spain’s University of Alcala (UAH) have partnered to organise an event named ‘'ALECS-2024' (Architectural Linguistics of Education in COLLABStudio). The aim of the event is to provide a bridge between the two institutions and bring them together to explore the design and understanding of educational buildings. 

The event was attended by nearly 90 students and faculty members from both the universities & LPU. 

As part of the event, delegates from Alcala University visited the educational infrastructure designed by renowned architects Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanerette and also the campus of Panjab University, Chandigarh. 

Guest Speakers at the Event

Jose Maria Ridao Dominguez, the Ambassador of Spain to India, honoured the inaugural session. He addressed the architecture schools and stressed the value of international collaboration. H.E. Mr. Dinesh K Patnaik, the Indian Ambassador in Spain, also facilitated the synergy session, underscoring the importance of such global collaborations within the architectural realm.

The visiting students explored the architectural brilliance of LPU's campus, renowned for its 'Brutalist' architecture and impactful urban presence at a regional scale. Dr. Ar Atul Singla, Chief Architect and head of LSAD, expressed, "Everyone at LPU is delighted to witness the campus serving as an inspirational model for our international guests."

The collaborative endeavour received appreciation and support from esteemed guests, including Ar. Kapil Setia, Chief Architect of Chandigarh Administration; and, Dr. Navdeep Asija, Director of Punjab Road Safety and Traffic Research Centre (PRSTRC). The presence of Dr. Ar. Ernesto Enrique Echeverria Valiente, Director of the Department of Architecture at the University of Alcala, and Ar. Charanjit S. Shah from the Creative Group in Delhi further enriched the collaborative sessions.

Faculty members at LSAD, including Ar. Rajendra Kumar, Prof. Tara Singla, Ar. Mohammed Yasar Arafath, Ar. Chetan Sachdeva, Ar. Priyadarshni Chathurvedi, Ar. Mustafizur Rehman, Ar. Abhinav Tripathi, and Ar. Sharen Handa, played a crucial role in mentoring and coordinating the program. Dr. Sorabh Lakhanpal, the Dean of Student Welfare at LPU, highlighted the importance of cultural exchanges in the understanding of architecture.

An exhibition was organised that showcased joint efforts of Spanish and Indian students. Inaugurated by LPU's Pro-Chancellor, Mrs. Rashmi Mittal, the exhibition featured photographic documentation, videography, and collages illustrating the students' perspectives on educational building philosophies.
 

The studio sessions held at LSAD provided an opportunity for intensive observation and night studio sessions, where architectural principles were discussed and collaboration among students from diverse cultural backgrounds was promoted.

This collaborative initiative between Alcala University and Lovely Professional University empowered future architects to tackle complex challenges with innovation, empathy, and a deep understanding of the collaborative nature of their profession. By embracing global counterparts, the collaboration embodied the essence of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" – ‘the world is one family’.
