IITs to Test New JEE Advanced Format on First-Year BTech Students in 2026; Check Rollout Timeline

IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal announced this development on June 14, 2026. The pilot adaptive aptitude test will run on freshers across IITs. These are first-year Bachelor of Technology (BTech) students at the IITs. The actual JEE Advanced 2026 exam will not use this new format.

The Joint Admission Board (JAB) has tasked IIT Kanpur with the design. The new format uses adaptive testing of quantitative and reasoning skills. Questions will be generated dynamically based on each student's performance. This approach measures real ability rather than rehearsed solutions.

Director Agrawal said the team will study the pilot results closely. The review will run over the next one to two years. A full shift to adaptive testing may take up to three years. IIT Roorkee, which conducts JEE Advanced 2026, has approved the pilot.

Why the IITs Are Exploring Adaptive Testing

The proposal comes from rising concerns about the coaching industry's influence. Many IIT aspirants now follow heavy classroom routines from a young age. Director Agrawal has repeatedly flagged this pressure as harmful.

The IITs want a test that rewards genuine reasoning over drilled patterns. The current JEE Advanced format relies on a fixed question paper. Coaching institutes can train students on past patterns and standard tricks.

An aptitude-based, dynamically generated test would change that equation. Each student would face questions tuned to their own performance level. Such a system is harder to crack through formula-based preparation alone.

What This Means for JEE Advanced 2026 Aspirants

The format change does not affect candidates writing JEE Advanced 2026. The current exam pattern remains unchanged for this year. Aspirants should continue preparing as per the existing syllabus and structure.

The new adaptive system may only enter the exam from 2027 onwards. Even that depends on the pilot results and JAB approval. Until JAB issues an official notification, the existing format stays valid.

Students writing JEE Advanced 2026 should focus on standard preparation. Subject knowledge across Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics remains the top priority. The pilot is an internal academic exercise within the IITs.

How Will the New Adaptive Test Work?

An adaptive test changes based on how a candidate answers. The system begins with a fairly difficult question. If the candidate answers it correctly, the next one becomes harder. If the answer is wrong, the next one becomes easier.

Over time, the computer settles on the candidate's maximum difficulty level. The format measures real problem-solving ability rather than memorised techniques. It also reduces the scope for repetitive coaching shortcuts.

For the pilot, IIT Kanpur has prepared the adaptive question bank. Selected first-year BTech students will take the test during the first term. Their performance data will feed directly into the review process.
