IIT BHU Varanasi Launches Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon 2023

New Delhi: The Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India and IIT (BHU) launched “Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon 2023” on October 26, 2023. It will aim to create and prototype innovative applications that can detect suspicious patterns on e-commerce platforms.

The hackathon will give participants an opportunity to create unique apps or software-based solutions such as browser extensions, plugins, add-ons, and mobile applications that can recognise the use, type and scale of dark patterns for e-commerce platforms.

The Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon 2023 inaugural ceremony was attended by top law institutes, higher educational institutes, professionals from national and international academies, students, numerous enterprises and leading e-commerce platforms.

Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon 2023 Rounds

IIT BHU and the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India have divided the hackathon into four stages/rounds, which are as follows:

Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon 2023 Key Areas

To prepare their entry for the hackathon, participants will focus on key areas such as pattern detection accuracy, user-friendly extension, pattern versioning, generative AI, repository management, data collection with privacy protection, crowd-sourced pattern identification, cross-browser compatibility, and artificial intelligence for detection and performance optimisation.

The criteria which will be used to evaluate participants during the hackathon include the demonstration of the solution as a turn-key solution, User Interface and User Experience, Accuracy and reliability, Adherence to functionalities and features, privacy and compliance, etc.

Dark Patterns Buster Hackathon 2023 Awards

The lucky winners will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement along with the prize money. The first winning team will get a prize of INR 10 Lakhs, the second award will be INR 5 Lakhs and the third winner will receive a prize worth INR 3 Lakhs.

In addition to this, participants in the fourth place will get prize money of INR 2 Lakhs, and the fifth position will receive a prize of INR 1 Lakh. The objective of the initiative is to protect consumers from any kind of unfair business practices.
