Preparing to study abroad can be an exciting yet challenging journey, especially when it comes to demonstrating English language proficiency for international universities. That's where the Duolingo English Test (DET) steps in – a digital-first solution transforming the way English language skills are assessed for academic purposes. The DET can be taken anytime and anywhere, at your own convenience. It is recognized by over 5000 programs worldwide and trusted by millions of students, is affordable, and delivers results within 2 days of completing the exam.

But what do students who have already been through this process have to say about the DET? Let's delve into the experiences of past students as they share their insights.

Rushil studying at Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania

“Funny story, I gave the DET twice but still managed to get my scores before my deadline. I've been a techie since I can remember. Because of my diverse interests, I think the intersection of business and technology should be the sweet spot to study. The ability to choose diverse majors and study them all at the same time made me choose the liberal education system in the US.

For my English test, I picked the DET for majorly two reasons. First, I had a deadline approaching and I wanted my test scores as soon as possible. Second, it was just convenient. I didn't want to go to the test centers just like my friends did. I also got my scores within 12 hours just by paying a little extra. Getting into Carnegie Mellon University is my first priority. But beyond that, having a greater learning experience and exposure is what I'm looking for.”

“When you are in between the process of Visa applications and your application for your college, you don't want the headache of studying for an English test. The Duolingo English Test made it very easy for me because we had a practice test on the website, which I took before the exam, and I felt like okay, I can do this. The DET made my life easy.”

Hercules Munda, from Ranchi, currently studying at SOAS University of London in the UK

“I took a couple of English proficiency tests but there were two factors that led me to ultimately choose the DET, the first being the availability. Coming from rural India, we don't have much infrastructure, and most of these standardized tests have a very specific infrastructure requirement. So I found out about the DET and tried it. The experience of taking the test was so much more relaxing compared to the other tests that I had taken. 50% of the Indian population comes from rural India, even if you take 30% of it, that's like 300 million students who are unable to get access to international education, just because the test is not affordable or they cannot take the test. Hence, I believe that an English language test should be more student-centric, which the DET is.”

Anika Hiremath, from Bangalore, is currently studying at The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the USA

“The deadline for my dream college was coming up. And I started going through the whole checklist. Okay, I have my essay ready, I've got my common app all ready to go. I can submit it a week earlier. It's okay, I can just do that. And then I was going through the requirements and then realized that they wanted me to give them a test score for an English proficiency test. And I was like, I haven't taken one of these. My deadline was tight, and I wasn’t able to get an appointment for other tests. I googled for options, and I found that it was the Duolingo English Test, and I knew I loved Duolingo! So I think for me, the DET was just this amalgamation of the best of everything that could happen for test taking. Because it was accessible, it was affordable, and it was super fast, and so I was super grateful for that.”

“Honestly, I was a little skeptical at first, about DET, because I was accustomed to the traditional exam, however, once I learned that it was accepted by over 4500 colleges, I trusted its credibility and was convinced that it was the right decision to make. Along with being affordable, accessible, and accurate, the Duolingo English Test is better than other proficiency tests because students will feel more relaxed, less nervous, and more confident because of the format of the test. And you can send the results to your desired university with ease.”
